About this place Repub Lounge

Repub Lounge occupies a consistent position at the top of every informal recommendation list for LGBTQ+ visitors to Kigali — not because it is a gay bar (it is not) but because its combination of international crowd, relaxed atmosphere, good cocktails, and Kimihurura location creates the most comfortable social environment in the city for same-sex couples who want to socialize without incident. The diplomatic and NGO community that frequents Kimihurura generates a social baseline that is considerably more internationally liberal than the Rwandan average, and Repub sits at the center of that scene. Live music some evenings, cocktail menu covering all the standards, comfortable indoor and outdoor seating. The KN 3 Rd location is walkable from the major Kimihurura hotels and accessible by taxi from anywhere in the city.

Overpriced, slow, and poorly served. The whole meal took two and a half hours before the food was finally all on the table. We ordered fish, but the kitchen served chicken instead. It then took nearly 30 minutes just to get a response from the staff. A waiter eventually admitted the first server had made the mistake — but offered no solution. We assumed the fish was on its way. After several reminders, they simply brought the same chicken back, saying it had already been used. Since this was our first meal in Rwanda, we chose not to argue and asked for the bill. That took forever too — and when it finally arrived, the fish we never received was still on it. At that point we asked for the manager. We had to ask three times, and he only appeared after we said we would leave without paying. One more thing worth knowing: our dishes came with no staple/side, and as foreigners we had no way of knowing. The waiter took the order and walked away without a word of explanation. We arrived not particularly hungry, became hungry waiting, and somehow left hungrier and more frustrated than when we sat down. Sharing this as a reference for others.
