Wellington's gay sauna scene is tiny. The city is small enough that there just isn't much infrastructure for dedicated gay saunas.

If you're coming specifically for sauna culture, know that options here are way more restricted than in Auckland, and even more so compared to Australian cities.

What's here

Wellington has had gay saunas come and go over the years, but there are never many open at once. The city's compact size means it can't support the kind of multi-venue sauna circuit you'd find in Auckland or Melbourne. What does operate tends to be pretty modest.

Auckland's the alternative

Auckland is about 650 kilometres north. You can fly there in under an hour, or take a coach for 8 hours. For a more developed sauna scene, Auckland's your best bet in New Zealand. Wellington's indoor cruising is limited to what its population can actually sustain.

Practical notes

Always check if a Wellington sauna is actually open before you go. The scene's so small that openings and closures are a big deal. For the full picture, see the Gay Wellington Guide.
