New Zealand decriminalised male same-sex relations in 1986, banned discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation in the Human Rights Act 1993, introduced civil unions in 2005 and opened marriage with joint adoption in August 2013, the first in the Asia-Pacific region. Hate motivated by sexual orientation or gender identity has been an aggravating factor in sentencing since 2002, historical convictions can be expunged since 2018, and conversion therapy was banned in 2022. Since June 2023 legal sex can be changed by statutory declaration, including a non-binary option. The 2023 census counted about 5 percent of adults as LGBTIQ+. Trans policy is the live argument: in 2025 the government ordered Sport NZ to scrap its inclusion guidelines and announced a puberty blocker ban for minors that the High Court put on hold in December 2025 and later found unlawful. Auckland's Karangahape Road is the centre of the scene, Wellington has a strong community, and Auckland Pride and the Big Gay Out run every February. For visitors it is among the most relaxed countries anywhere.
