I originally intended to book Mandala Spa, but my poor judgment led me to be lured in by the tour guide's beautiful photos and the seemingly luxurious name of the package: "Imperial Gold Leaf Spa." Remember to confirm the package details, including the number of hours and the specific services offered—the more detailed, the better—to avoid a huge disappointment. Also, ask beforehand if you can change therapists if you feel the service is unsatisfactory. I paid $120 for this "Imperial" experience thinking it would be amazing, but I was too optimistic. Please see my long review and details below:
Poseidon Spa is a Korean-owned place, perfect for Instagram-worthy photos. After being taken by shuttle to the resort located in the mountains, the "Imperial" experience begins. You're greeted with an extravagant setup: the entrance steps are lined with therapists who bow and say "Welcome Ma'am/Sir" as guests pass by. Then you're led to a more secluded reception area (there was another group of Korean guests on the shuttle bus who were being explained their packages at the general reception area near the entrance). A glass of grape juice (delicious!) is served, and the explanation of the massage package begins.
The explanation feels rushed, as if they're hurrying you to finish it to move on to the next step. After leaving the pavilion, the masseuse will kneel down on one knee in full view of everyone, raising the backs of your hands to her forehead and silently pressing them for three seconds. It might be some kind of ritual; I'm not sure if it's a Philippine tradition or just a show. For someone like me, it felt a bit unusual, like being in a royal palace.
Next, you walk past a pool; the first half of the water is greenish and murky, like eutrophic. Only at the sculpture of a sea god spouting water is the water clean. The room this time boasts a supposedly infinity pool, a bubble bath, and a private massage room. The total time was 2.5 hours:
1. 30 minutes were for an introduction to the environment and taking Instagram-worthy photos. It's recommended to bring a nice swimsuit, otherwise you'll be completely naked during the session. I didn't know this the first time and didn't bring one. There are other restaurant buildings across the way; you can see them with binoculars, although you can cover yourself with a towel. Below the pool are residential areas with chickens, hence the squawking. There was also a faint, unpleasant smell, like something Alice's car had passed by. So I quickly took some photos and went back inside.
2. 30 minutes was for a back exfoliation. They used an unknown oil mixed with coarse sugar granules, which tasted sweet. Only the back was treated; you had to do the front yourself. The effect was quite good; my skin felt smoother. Because my hair wasn't tied up, the masseuse tried to fix it with the available materials, but failed. She seemed like a beginner. I felt a little strange at this point.
3. The last 1.5 hours was the actual massage, and also the worst part. It started with a back massage. After applying oil, she just groped around aimlessly, completely ignoring fascia and acupoints, just sliding her fingers across the surface. I got impatient and asked her to massage my face instead. After washing her hands and applying cream, she again groped around aimlessly, completely missing the target areas! Then I asked her to massage my tense neck, but she again completely missed the mark, just pressing directly on the neck muscles! Unsurprisingly, I was in pain and injured the next day.
At the end, you usually sit down to rest and enjoy some hot tea or snacks, but this place didn't offer that at all. They just took you to a shuttle bus and left without even asking how you were doing...
$120 USD bought you a lavish setup, all show and no substance. The technique was completely subpar, very disappointing! Many places aren't ready after the pandemic, and this expensive spa resort was no exception.
If you want to take beautiful photos and don't care about the massage technique, you can choose this place; but I believe most people want to enjoy good technique and relax until they fall asleep. I deeply regretted this experience. I would have been much better off choosing a massage parlor on the street that led me to a small room; their techniques might have been much better!
PS. The only good things about this place were the exfoliation and the complimentary dried bananas. The massage itself wasn't even worth one star.
Oh, by the way, this place seems to be in the city center. The $120 service I received was at the one next to the golf course. I saw a review left by Victor, and the shop even replied. This was also recommended by the tour guide, and I was extremely disappointed. Although the tour guide mentioned it to the shop afterwards, and they said they would let us have a free proper massage the next day, it was a pity we had to leave, so we'll have to wait until next time (I wonder if
