About this place Gertrude Stein & Alice B. Toklas Grave

A few minutes from Wilde's sphinx, in division 94 of Père Lachaise, a simple headstone reads GERTRUDE STEIN. Walk behind it and you find the second name: ALICE B. TOKLAS. Stein and Toklas were partners for nearly forty years — hosts of the rue de Fleurus salon where Picasso, Matisse and Hemingway learned what modern meant, and authors between them of one of the most public private marriages of the twentieth century, decades before any law would call it that. Stein died in 1946; Toklas lived another twenty-one years, guarding the legacy, and was buried beside her in 1967. The placement of her name on the reverse of the stone was her own wish — in her partner's shadow, as she chose in life. Visiting: same hours as the cemetery (free, ~8am-6pm). Visitors leave pebbles in the Jewish tradition. Together with Wilde's tomb, it makes Père Lachaise the essential queer-history stop in Paris — an hour among the two most eloquent graves in the canon.

As I gaze upon Gertrude Stein's grave in the Cimetière du Montparnasse in Paris, I immediately sense the simplicity and quiet respect that pervade this place. The gravestone is relatively plain, neither ornate nor flashy, yet dignified nonetheless. Crafted from simple stone, it bears the name Gertrude Stein in clear lettering, along with the dates of her life (1874–1946). It is a quiet, unobtrusive place, fitting for someone who played such a significant role in 20th-century art and literature. Right next to it is the grave of Alice B. Toklas, Stein's life partner and closest confidante. The two women, who spent much of their lives together, are buried close to one another here, reflecting the deep bond they shared. The cemetery itself is quiet and surrounded by trees, and as I contemplate the grave, I reflect on the influential role Stein played in Parisian literary and artistic circles. As a writer, but also as a patron of many artists, including Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway, she was a central figure in the modern art movement. This thought imbues the place with a sense of intellectual significance, even though the grave itself is simple. Visitors often leave small stones on the grave as a sign of their respect and remembrance—a tradition that emphasizes the quiet, enduring memory of Stein. It is a simple yet powerful expression of appreciation for her work and her life, which influenced so many. The place feels like a tranquil sanctuary where Gertrude Stein's legacy lives on, even as the bustling world roars around the cemetery. Last updated: December 22, 2023

After seeing all the flowers and mementos left at other famous artists' graves, it was disconcerting to see nothing here, save a couple of arrangements of the rocks into hearts. Alice B. Toklas's grave is behind Gertrude Stein's.

I always been a fan of her, I was wondering around and I stumbled upon her grave, I didn't even knew she was there, it was her birthday day 03-02 I left a flower and wish her happy birthday.

A simple block of stone with the name (now barely visible) on the edge of Père-Lachaise, I felt like keeping it company for a while...
