"Wandering scholar" and "avant-bard" Psoy Korolenko brings his new programme TYGYDYM! to Berlin, an evening of multilingual folk-cabaret from one of the most singular voices in contemporary Russian and Yiddish song.
Psoy Korolenko is a singer, songwriter, translator and scholar with a PhD in Russian literature. Since the early 2000s he has built a genre entirely his own: a one-man cabaret that moves between Russian bard tradition (avtorskaya pesnya), Yiddish klezmer and theatre song, French chanson, free-style poetry and intellectual comedy, often within a single piece, and often switching languages mid-song. He performs mainly in Russian, Yiddish, English and French, accompanying himself on keyboard.
He describes his own practice as "tradaptation" and "Spell-Art," a playful, exploratory approach to translation that leans into linguistic distance rather than smoothing it over. Alongside his solo work, he is a member of the Yiddish supergroup The Brothers Nazaroff, co-creator of the Grammy-nominated Yiddish Glory project (reviving WWII-era Yiddish songs from Soviet archives with historian Anna Shternshis), and artistic director of the JetLAG Festival in New York.
An evening that is as intellectually restless as it is deeply musical: folk roots, sharp wit and constant movement between worlds and languages.
