About this place Onkel Emma

Onkel Emma is Braunschweig's queer centre, at Echternstraße 9 on the west side of the old town. The local association VSE e.V. (Verein für sexuelle Emanzipation, founded 1989) has run it since 2011. With no commercial gay bar left in the city, it's the closest thing Braunschweig has to one: every Friday evening there's a queer pub night that anyone can drop into. During the week the rooms host groups and counselling. Groups listed over the years include the youth group JOE (up to 27), Trans*Lions for trans people, a lesbian group and a queer refugees group, and VSE also organises the CSD and the MenDance/WomenDance parties.
