Arrival – Images of First Closeness: Exhibition Opening
Views on birth and security by artist and midwife Birgit Heimbach
What touch is the first closeness? Is it already present in the womb? Or does it occur as soon as the child's eyes see the light of the world? When the head is placed on the unknown, yet familiar breast?
The artist and midwife Birgit Heimbach opens a gateway to the beginning of life. Using various techniques, she presents fascinating glimpses of the everyday yet so special – the arrival into life. After studying art history and sociology, she combines philosophy, science, and midwifery in her works. Heimbach demonstrates this powerful combination in numerous publications in the Deutsche Hebammen Zeitschrift and in several books.
The special exhibition "Arrival – Images of First Closeness" at the Hospital Museum offers surprising and new perspectives on becoming a mother and arriving into life. Over 65 artworks provide insight into the complex processes of the human body while simultaneously showing deep emotions. Anatomical yet colorful: people, organs, intimate relationships, knowledge about breast milk: Heimbach captures the facets of life and conveys knowledge and concepts with drawings, prints, and paintings that remain in memory.
Exhibition: September 12, 2026 – 31.
