The UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) of the United Nations' global sustainability agenda aims to achieve gender equality worldwide and empower all women and girls to self-determination. This is intended to realize the right to equality and non-discrimination enshrined in international frameworks and norms – such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At the same time, there are numerous indications that gender equality has a positive impact on many other social and economic areas, thus contributing significantly to advancing the global sustainability agenda as a whole.

An important factor in promoting gender equality is access to investments and financial services. Money opens up scope for action and enables active shaping of economic and social developments. This is precisely where Gender-Lens Investing (GLI) comes in: the approach directs investments in such a way that they support SDG 5 and systematically consider gender-specific aspects in areas such as corporate governance, leadership bodies, employment, supply chains, products and services, and at the portfolio level.
