The resulting problems, such as accepting "being gay" or overcoming guilt feelings towards their partner and children, have led to the formation of self-help groups. Here, gay fathers can finally talk and learn that their problems are shared by many others. The individual can articulate their fears and is encouraged to consciously deal with their situation – with the help of the group; possible paths are shown to them through the sharing of their own experiences. There are many different situations: some fathers live in the family and want to stay there, others are in the separation phase or have already separated from their family, still others live with their children or have entered into a gay partnership. A major problem area is the gay father's relationship with his child, especially the difficulty for him to explain his situation and the possible separation from the family to the child.
