What reviewers say

Visitors praise Hotel Fregehaus for its central location, quiet atmosphere, and stylish blend of historic charm and modern comfort, often highlighting the beautiful courtyard entrance and well-designed rooms. However, some guests have noted issues with attention to detail, such as being assigned an accessibility room without requesting one, and one reviewer mentioned noise from laundry carts early in the morning.

About this place Hotel Fregehaus

Hotel Fregehaus occupies a historic Baroque building on Katharinenstrasse in Leipzig's old town — a architecturally significant address in a city that takes its Baroque and Gründerzeit heritage seriously. The hotel is boutique in scale, with individually designed rooms that reflect Leipzig's design and arts culture rather than the standardised approach of chain hotels. It has developed a strong reputation with LGBTQ+ travellers through its explicitly welcoming service culture and its positioning two minutes' walk from the Barfußgässchen — Leipzig's most central gay bar street. The hotel's location at the heart of the old town means it is equally well-positioned for the city's cultural infrastructure: the Gewandhaus concert hall (home of the world-famous Leipzig orchestra), the opera, the Bach museums, and the Nikolaikirche (where the 1989 Monday Demonstrations began) are all within walking distance. For LGBTQ+ visitors to Leipzig who want to be at the centre of everything — the cultural city and the gay scene both — Fregehaus offers the best combination of location, quality, and welcome.

I've stayed at the Fregehaus several times over the past few years when I've been to Leipzig, including last week. The small hotel is in a lovely, central location, the rooms and breakfast are very good, and everything has a unique, personal touch—what more could you want? Unfortunately, I have to deduct one star for the lack of communication from the staff. A smile, eye contact, a friendly word, or simply asking if everything was alright would have been the key to my overall hotel satisfaction, both at breakfast and at reception. 😉

We chose this hotel because of its very central location. We were aware that it would be a bit lively in an older building, especially on weekends, and that's perfectly understandable. Unfortunately, however, there were a few issues with the room itself that kept us awake. The building is extremely noisy. You can hear conversations from the next room, footsteps in the hallway, and every closing of the room doors. The latter, unfortunately, feel like ordinary apartment doors and offer hardly any soundproofing or insulation, which detracts from the charm of the old building. Modern upgrades are urgently needed here. Furthermore, we couldn't darken the room. The existing curtain served more as a privacy screen. When we pointed this out in the morning, the receptionist rather rudely informed us that there were exterior shutters. However, since there were flowerpots on the windowsill, we simply couldn't see them – a brief note in the room would have been very helpful. Since the mattress was also very hard, we decided to check out early after a sleepless night.

My absolute favorite hotel in Leipzig. Small and charming, right in the city center, yet quiet. The owners have done a fantastic job restoring this wonderful medieval building. The combination of old and new is more than successful.

A beautiful boutique hotel in an exquisite location. Tastefully decorated, friendly staff, clean and well-maintained, and a fantastic breakfast. We were delighted and would love to return!

A beautiful 16th-century Baroque merchant's house has been stylishly converted into a hotel with an elevator. The Hotel Fregehaus enjoys a very central yet quiet location in the old town. It features a lovely courtyard, a self-service lounge called the "Blue Salon," and excellent free Wi-Fi. The rooms are beautifully and stylishly furnished, and the service is good. I recommend booking rooms 3 or 17. Breakfast costs €13, but there are also many cafes nearby. Leipzig's Tourist Information Center is directly opposite the hotel, as is the impressive Museum of Fine Arts. Good restaurants, such as Weinstock and Parkhäuser, are also in the immediate vicinity, as is the impressive market square.

Three stars might not seem like much, but this hotel is truly fantastic! There's just one small thing missing that definitely needs improvement or addition. The rooms are sturdy, simple, but perfectly adequate and offer plenty of space. The bathrooms are also well-designed and comfortable. My biggest criticism: there's no air conditioning. This isn't a big problem in the colder months, but it can be extremely uncomfortable in the summer. When it's still 25°C (77°F) in the old building at 10 p.m., you practically can't sleep. Two of us were on the third floor and only got about two hours of sleep that night. Unfortunately, we had to move to another hotel the next day. The service is incredibly friendly, helpful, and understanding. We explained our situation, and they were completely sympathetic – I really appreciated that. The location is also fantastic! It's a two-minute walk to the heart of Leipzig's city center. Restaurants, boutiques, and even a small shopping mall are just a few minutes away. Conclusion: I would recommend this hotel to anyone who isn't sensitive to high temperatures or who books during a cooler time of year. Aside from the lack of air conditioning, I was very happy with everything else this hotel offers and would definitely return in winter. 😊
