Thessaloniki Pride

Thessaloniki Pride is the organisational force behind Greece's second largest LGBTQ+ Pride event and one of the most important LGBTQ+ advocacy organisations in northern Greece. The annual Pride event, held in June, draws approximately 30,000 people — a significant number for a city of Thessaloniki's size and one that reflects the strength and commitment of the local LGBTQ+ community. The event has particular political weight: Thessaloniki is a more conservative city than Athens in its social culture, with stronger Orthodox Church influence and a larger proportion of its population in traditional communities — and the continued growth of the Pride event in this context is a statement of the community's determination and the shifting attitudes of the broader population. The parade route through the city centre brings the Pride event into contact with the general public in a way that event-in-a-park formats do not, and the organisers have consistently maintained that this visibility is central to the purpose of the event. Beyond the annual Pride, the organisation runs year-round programming including community events, legal support services, and advocacy work.
