About this place Thessaloniki Pride

Thessaloniki Pride is the civil-society organisation behind Northern Greece's largest LGBTQ+ Pride, first held in 2012. Based in the city centre, the group organises the annual Pride festival each June — a week of talks, film screenings, cultural events and parties that culminates in a march along the waterfront from White Tower Square — and works year-round on education, advocacy and community events. It is the main LGBTQ+ organising body in Thessaloniki and a natural first point of contact for visitors who want to connect with the local community.

While I support equal rights for all regardless of sexual orientation, my recent experience with this organization left me disappointed. I made a comment under one of their posts, completely polite and respectful and within the bounds of my right to express such an opinion. Several followers of the page began attacking me simply because I did not agree with the most extreme views that they promoted. That in itself does not look good. But, the worst part was that the administrators of the page, i.e. this organization, immediately rushed to limit my ability to respond to these individuals without limiting the ability of these individuals to continue to verbally attack me. Unfortunately, seeing as this organization has such a big problem tolerating dissent and more generally the concept of freedom of speech, I would not be able to recommend it, nor their events. I would say that they are defaming their cause. I would also like to clarify that the doctrine they promote that supposedly anyone who does not accept trans women as natural women is homophobic does not apply, since it is mainly lesbians who are fighting to keep men dressed in women's clothing out of places intended for the use of women. I am sorry, but it seems to me that we are essentially talking about a misogynistic organization. Another issue that impressed me is that people from abroad come to organize Thessaloniki Pride. Why is this necessary? Why don't they create a local organization and make an imported one? In the end, these people completely blocked me since not only do they not accept dissenting opinions, but they also obviously want to cover up the existence of dissenters. I think that there are other gay organizations in Thessaloniki besides this one and I would recommend that you not get involved with this one until it embraces democratic principles.
