Gay Cruising in Palermo: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

Palermo is loud in the best way. In the old markets, the stallholders still sing out their prices in Sicilian, the abbanniata; the air smells of frying panelle, charcoal smoke and lemons; and by night the Vucciria, the old market square below Via Roma, turns into an open-air bar of plastic chairs, cheap beer and grilled meat. The palazzi are crumbling and gilded at the same time, Monte Pellegrino glows orange above the bay at sunset, and nobody eats dinner before nine. The cruising scene is small and sits right in the middle of all this: one men-only disco and cruise club, Bunker, on the city's new Gay Street in the Vucciria, and one gay sauna, Maxximum Time, a short walk away near the Teatro Massimo. That's it, and it's enough for a good night, as long as you keep it indoors.

Legal in one line: Sex between men has been legal in Italy since 1890, and same-sex civil unions since 2016, but there is no full marriage. Cruise clubs and saunas operate legally as private members' clubs, which is why you'll need a membership card. Sex in a public place is not: under Article 527 of the penal code it brings fines of €5,000 to €30,000, and it's a criminal offence near places used by minors.

Bunker: the men's club on the Gay Street

Bunker (Bunker Men's Club, or Bunker Disco & Men's Club) is on Via Argenteria 3 in the Vucciria; Travel Gay gives the address as Via Argenteria Nuova 3. Directories say it opened at the end of 2025, as a collaboration between Palermo and Barcelona, in a space of about 200 m². According to Travel Gay and misterb&b, you'll find:

    • a video bar and a dance floor with house music;
    • a cruising area, a "red zone" and private cabins;
    • the Maximo Collection, a small gay fashion showroom and shop;
    • themed nights: masks on Wednesdays, Top & Bottom parties on Thursdays, and disco parties at weekends.

    Hours: Travel Gay lists Wednesday to Saturday, 23:00–04:00, closed Sunday to Tuesday. In May 2026, local press described two formats: a Bunker day from 16:00 to 20:00 for the LGBTQ+ community and straight-friendly guests, and a Bunker night from 23:00 to 04:00 for men only. Listings don't agree on which days the afternoon session runs, so check its social media before you go.

    Price and card: Travel Gay gives €10 entry including one drink. GayOut's listing says a membership card is required; Travel Gay says it's an ARCO card, but Bunker isn't on ARCO's own club list, so ask at the door which card it issues. Bring photo ID.

    What visitors say: 2026 reviews praise the cocktails, the bartenders and a friendly, discreet welcome, with a mixed-age crowd that one regular put at mostly 20 to 40. Others are blunter: two June 2026 visitors found very few people and little cruising on the nights they went, and a March 2026 reviewer said there was no real darkroom, only small curtained cabins and an open dance floor. Go on a themed night or a weekend, after midnight, and treat it as a bar with a cruising area rather than a big European cruise club.

    The Gay Street

    On 1 June 2026, Bunker and its partners (the Barcelona-based European Gay Network, Canal G Onlus Italia and the Stop Omofobia Center Palermo) inaugurated what they called Sicily's first Gay Street: the stretch of Via Argenteria between Piazza Raffaello and Piazza della Vucciria, twinned with Barcelona's. A banner reads "Welcome in the Gay Street Palermo!", and the plan includes an LGBTQ+ information point and an anti-violence centre, with local shops, trattorias and a bookshop taking part. At the end of June 2026, the Gay Street organised a silent candlelit march from Piazza Raffaello to Piazza della Vucciria after the killing of Mirko Moriconi, a 24-year-old gay man, and his mother. The street is festive, but the reason it exists is serious.

    Maxximum Time: the sauna by the Teatro Massimo

    Maxximum Time is Palermo's gay sauna for men, a few steps from the Teatro Massimo. Travel Gay, misterb&b and GayOut give the address as Via Alessandro Scarlatti 3 (GayOut: 1/3); ARCO, the club network it belongs to, lists Piazzetta San Giuliano 10. It's the same venue, behind a discreet entrance. Listings mention:

    • a Finnish sauna, a Turkish steam bath and a jacuzzi;
    • a darkroom, private cabins, a video room and a cruising area;
    • a lounge bar, a smoking area, free Wi-Fi and massages.

    Hours: closed on Mondays (a May 2026 visitor found the door shut). ARCO lists Tuesday to Sunday, 14:00–21:00; Travel Gay and misterb&b say 14:00–22:00. Arrive by 20:00 to be safe.

    Price and card: ARCO says ARCO membership is required. Reported prices vary: misterb&b gives €15 as the normal entry, while a November 2025 visitor paid €25. Earlier visitors paid the entry plus a separate fee for the card. One June 2026 reviewer paid €2 to change towels. Bring cash in small notes and ID, and phone ahead on 091 631 4158 if you want to be sure.

    What visitors say: reviews from late 2025 to mid-2026 are split. Many praise friendly staff, a good masseur and a clean welcome; others complain about the whirlpool water, lukewarm showers and cabins that need refreshing, and several found the bar unstaffed. Crowds are small: one visitor counted about 10 men on a November weekday, another about 15 on a Saturday and 25 on a Sunday in May 2026. Sunday afternoon is the best bet.

    The card you'll need: ARCO (the old ANDDOS)

    Italian saunas and cruise clubs are private associations, so you join before you go in. Many guides and venues still talk about the ANDDOS card; today the main network is ARCO. In Sicily, ARCO's club list includes Maxximum Time in Palermo and Terme di Achille and Codice Rosso in Catania, so one card covers all three.

    • You join in person at a member club, with valid photo ID.
    • A standard card is valid for a year across the network, and non-Italians can take a shorter Travel Card (valid for 90 days, as reported in 2026).
    • Fees are set by each club. Ask at Maxximum Time's reception: "Avete la Travel Card?"

    Outdoors: why we don't recommend Punta Priola. GayOut and other directories list the rocks at Punta Priola, on the Addaura coast below Monte Pellegrino, as a night-time cruising spot. We don't send people there. Sex in a public place is illegal in Italy: under Article 527 of the penal code, it's an administrative offence with a fine of €5,000 to €30,000, and a crime carrying a prison sentence if it happens in or near places used by minors. The coast is rocky, isolated and dark at night, and GayOut's own city guide notes that Palermo is more conservative than Rome or Milan. Bunker and Maxximum Time are a ten-minute walk apart in the centre, legal, and far cheaper than a fine.

    A beach day, with your swimsuit on

    Mondello, Palermo's famous sandy beach with its turquoise water and Art Nouveau promenade, is about 15–20 minutes by taxi, and in summer it's packed with families. For something quieter, gay Palermo heads north-west to Barcarello, at Sferracavallo, and the coast of the Capo Gallo nature reserve beyond it: a mix of rock platforms and small beaches with clear water, beach clubs and free stretches, and fish restaurants in the old fishing village. Gay travel sites list Barcarello as a gay-friendly beach, and naturists have long used parts of the Capo Gallo coast. But none of it is an officially authorised naturist beach: Sicily's naturist beaches are not regulated, and local media have warned that nude sunbathers there risk fines. Keep your swimwear on, respect the reserve's rules, and save everything else for indoors. Sicily's first official naturist area is at Forza d'Agrò, near Taormina, on the other side of the island.

    Older names: some older guides and GayOut records mention a "Sauna Kronos" in Palermo. We found no venue trading under that name in 2026, and GayOut's own city guide describes it as closed. The only gay sauna open today is Maxximum Time.

    A Palermo night

    Start with street food: an arancina (in Palermo it's feminine, and people care), panelle (chickpea fritters) and crocchè (potato croquettes) in a sesame roll with a squeeze of lemon, or a slice of sfincione, the thick, onion-topped Palermitan pizza. Order your arancina accarne (meat ragù and peas) or abburro (ham, mozzarella and béchamel). The brave go for pani ca meusa, a bun of slow-cooked veal spleen and lung, with or without cheese. For a first drink, Exit, on Piazza San Francesco di Paola, is the city's long-running gay bar, open since 1996 according to Travel Gay; listings disagree on its exact hours, but it's an evening venue, busiest from Thursday to Saturday. Then walk down through the old town to the Vucciria, where Piazza Caracciolo and the lanes around it fill with plastic chairs, bottles of cheap beer, smoke from the meat grills, speakers on the pavement and crowds of young Palermitans late into the night: the city's real pre-party, right outside Bunker's door, and on to Bunker after midnight.

    Practical tips

    • ID and cash: bring your passport or ID card for the membership cards, and euros in small notes.
    • Distances: Maxximum Time and Bunker are less than a kilometre apart, roughly a 10–15 minute walk through the old town. The sauna is an afternoon and early-evening venue; Bunker is a late-night one. You can do both in one day.
    • Late at night: the old town is lively until late, but some alleys are dark and empty after the bars close. Keep valuables in a locker inside the venues, and take a taxi home if you're staying outside the centre: book a radio taxi by phone or through a taxi app rather than hoping to flag one down in the alleys. Inside the old town, around Quattro Canti, Via Maqueda (largely pedestrianised) and Via Roma, walking is easiest.
    • Apps: Grindr and Romeo work in Palermo. Meet new people in a bar or venue first, not at a private address or an isolated spot.
    • Language: reception staff may speak only Italian; a few words help (see below). You can always say "No, grazie" and leave, in any club, at any time.
    • Community and health: Arcigay Palermo runs a health desk (Sportello Salute) and was recruiting volunteers for it in autumn 2026.
    • Further afield: Catania, on the other side of the island, has two saunas and the cruise bar Codice Rosso. See our Catania saunas guide.

    Palermo Pride

    Palermo Pride is the big week of the year. In 2026 the parade was on Saturday 20 June, under the slogan "Liberiamo il desiderio!" ("let's free desire"). It gathered from 16:00 on Via Roma at the corner of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, set off at 17:00, passed Exit on Piazza San Francesco di Paola, and ended at the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa, with a free stage until midnight and a closing party. Six floats joined the march, and the event had the city's official patronage. The 2027 date had not been officially announced at the time of writing; GayOut lists Saturday 19 June 2027, the third Saturday of June, as the expected date. Expect Bunker and Maxximum Time to be at their busiest that week.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I go cruising in Palermo?

Indoors, at two venues in the old town less than a kilometre apart. Bunker, on Via Argenteria in the Vucciria, is a men-only disco and cruise club with a cruising area and private cabins, open late from Wednesday to Saturday. Maxximum Time, near the Teatro Massimo, is the city's gay sauna, open from 14:00 every day except Monday. Both are members' clubs, so bring photo ID.

Is Bunker in Palermo open in 2026?

Yes, as far as we can tell. Bunker co-founded Palermo's Gay Street on Via Argenteria, which opened on 1 June 2026, and visitors were still reviewing it in June 2026. Travel Gay lists Wednesday to Saturday from 23:00 to 04:00 and €10 entry with a drink, and local press described an afternoon session from 16:00 to 20:00 open to everyone. Recent reviews are mixed: some nights are quiet, and one visitor said there was no real darkroom, only small curtained cabins. Check its social media before you go.

Do I need an ARCO or ANDDOS card in Palermo?

For the sauna, yes. Maxximum Time is an ARCO member club, and ARCO says membership is required; it is issued at the door with photo ID, and many guides still call it the ANDDOS card. Bunker also asks for a membership card. Travel Gay says it is an ARCO card, but Bunker is not on ARCO's club list, so ask at the door which card it issues.

Is outdoor cruising at Punta Priola or Addaura safe?

We don't recommend it. Some directories still list the rocks at Punta Priola, on the Addaura coast, as a night-time cruising spot, but sex in a public place is illegal in Italy: under Article 527 of the penal code it brings a fine of €5,000 to €30,000, and it is a crime carrying a prison sentence near places used by minors. The coast is dark and isolated at night. Bunker and Maxximum Time are legal, cheaper than a fine and safer.

When is Palermo Pride?

In June. Palermo Pride 2026 marched on Saturday 20 June, leaving Via Roma at the corner of Corso Vittorio Emanuele at 17:00 and ending at the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa, under the slogan "Liberiamo il desiderio". The 2027 date had not been officially announced at the time of writing; Pride is usually held on a Saturday in the second half of June.
