Latvia has legal protections for same-sex couples and is generally welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. Major cities and tourist destinations are the most established; see each city page for the current scene and venue reviews.
Same-sex partnerships are recognised in Latvia, though full marriage may still be pending. The Legal Status panel above has the current position. Homosexuality decriminalized 1992. Employment anti-discrimination on sexual orientation since 2006 (gender identity not covered). Constitution defines marriage as man-woman (2005-06 amendment), banning same-sex marriage. Same-sex civil unions legal since 1 July 2024, granting most spousal rights except adoption. Legal gender change allowed (surgery required); no non-binary recognition. Conversion therapy not banned. Attitudes conservative but improving; Riga safer than rural areas.
