Gay Bars & Clubs in Rotterdam
Rotterdam has its own gay scene, distinct from Amsterdam and proud of it. It is smaller, more local, and refreshingly free of tourist-trap energy. Nearly everything sits in the city centre within a short walk, so a proper bar crawl takes one evening and no planning.
Where to Go
Van Oldenbarneveltstraat is the current gay street, home to Bar Elio and Cafe Strano. A few minutes away, a second micro-cluster sits around Keerweer and Schiedamsedijk with Cafe KeerWeer and Bar Loge 90. Ferry, the flagship queer club, is on Westblaak 127 between the two, just off Witte de Withstraat, the main nightlife strip of the city. If you only remember one address, make it Ferry.
The Venues
Ferry
Ferry is the flagship queer club of Rotterdam and the closest thing the city has to a scene headquarters. Thursdays are Mankracht, the men-only night; Fridays and Saturdays bring drag shows and themed parties; and late-night queer collectives like QueerX host their Culo Club parties here. Expect a young, mixed queer crowd and a packed dance floor after midnight.
Cafe KeerWeer
The veteran of the scene: a drag and cabaret bar that has been a Rotterdam institution for more than 35 years, open until six in the morning. Small, camp and full of regulars who will talk to you. It even runs its own parade float culture during Rotterdam Pride. Go late.
Bar Elio
The newcomer everyone is talking about. Elio opened in March 2025 in the former premises of the iconic Bar de Regenboog on Van Oldenbarneveltstraat, named after the lead of Call Me By Your Name. Think of it as the little brother of Ferry: Messy Wednesdays, anti-karaoke Thursdays and drag queen bingo on Saturdays, open Wednesday to Saturday evenings. Stylish, friendly and the best-reviewed gay bar in town.
Cafe Strano
Strano, on Van Oldenbarneveltstraat a few doors from Elio, has been going for over twenty years: a trendy small gay bar with a dance floor, video screens and cocktails. It works as a relaxed cafe early in the evening and turns loud and dancey on weekend nights.
Bar Loge 90
A proper Dutch gay cafe on Schiedamsedijk near the Beurs metro, open daily from early afternoon with a sun terrace and happy hour. Zero pretension; if you want to see what local gay Rotterdam actually looks like, this is it.
Bonaparte
A gay and drag cafe on Nieuwe Binnenweg with a long history and a loyal following, continuing under new ownership since October 2025. More about conversation and cabaret than dancing. Reliable, warm and very Rotterdam.
Cafe naar Ons
A cosy gay-run cafe on Oude Binnenweg, opened in 2022. Neighbourhood-style, with a mixed queer crowd and a big heart.
Club Villa Thalia
Not a gay club, but a big mainstream venue that programs regular drag shows and Pride parties and draws a queer-friendly crowd for its bigger nights. Worth checking the agenda if you want a large-scale club night.
When to Visit
Weekends are lively year-round, but the city peaks during Rotterdam Pride in the second half of September, when more than a hundred parties and events take over the centre. The local guides gayrotterdam.nl and qmeet.nl keep a current agenda.
