About this place Bletchley Park — Alan Turing

Bletchley Park is where Alan Turing helped win a war. As head of Hut 8, he led the team that broke the naval Enigma cipher — work credited with shortening the Second World War by years. The same state prosecuted him in 1952 for homosexuality, imposed chemical castration, and stripped his security clearance; he died of cyanide poisoning in 1954. The royal pardon came in 2013, and the 'Turing Law' pardoning tens of thousands of convicted men followed in 2017. The museum tells both stories. Block B houses the permanent exhibition on Turing's life and work — including the world's largest public display of Enigma machines — and Hut 8 contains his recreated wartime office. The site treats his persecution honestly, as part of his biography rather than a footnote. Visiting: open daily (9:30am-5pm summer, to 4pm winter), with tickets valid a full year. From London Euston, trains reach Bletchley in about 40 minutes and the entrance is a five-minute walk from the station — the easiest and most rewarding LGBTQ-history day trip from the capital.
