About this place Manto

Manto, one of Canal Street's first gay bars, is a landmark in Manchester's LGBTQ+ scene.

In the Village, Manto has a sleek, modern look, but it’s still the kind of place that feels welcoming. That’s why it’s stuck around so long. You can grab a coffee during the day or a cocktail at night; the crowd changes, too. Expect a more mature set during daylight hours, then a younger, louder energy on the weekends.

For a spot right on Canal Street, Manto is surprisingly affordable. It’s one of the cheaper places to get a drink in the Village, which is a good thing if you’re looking to experience Manchester’s gay bar scene without spending a fortune. The bar's been here for years, so it's deeply tied into the neighborhood’s history.

Come here for a well-kept gay bar with a polished feel and friendly staff. It’s the sort of place you can settle into for a few drinks, listen to the chatter, and get a real sense of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community.

We got to skip the que cause my friend is a friend of a friend of whoever - this was probably 20 years ago, but I remember the night well! I seen some things on that place i had never seen in my life! 🙈 The toilets were something that will haunt me forever! Irrespective, it was a brilliant night out & we all had a cracking time!

On 12/04/2026 at 2:25, I experienced an unacceptable incident with one of the security staff at this place. He allowed the people before and after me in the queue to enter, but when it was my turn, I was told I was not allowed in without any clear reason, despite not having done anything wrong. I was the only person singled out, which raises serious concerns about the basis of this decision. This behavior appears discriminatory and is highly unprofessional, showing a clear lack of respect for customers. I will not be returning to this place, and I do not recommend it to anyone who might be subjected to similar treatment. Management should seriously review their staff’s behavior and ensure proper training on treating all people fairly and with respect.
