French Saloon

Charming restaurant on the first floor overlooking Little Bourke St with an internally faced terrace and bookable function room (which is sadly not, as the sign on the swing doors says, a Salon du Thé). As in France the menu is small but precise and excellently executed. Service was suitably formal but warm. Would love to return for an aperitif on the terrace in warmer weather.

The dessert wine was delicious. The goat cheese was nice. There was alcohol in the gougère wich wasn't specified. It is a very expensive restaurant

Charming French bistro with high end a la carte menu. The entrance is simple wooden door with a small blue sign and stairs that leads up to a first floor loft. A nice atmospheric dining room with windows over a bustling hardware lane. The service was very friendly and personable, anything seemed possible. A nice variety of tasty dishes to suit many diets. We had the duck pate, snapper and Parisian gnocchi, all delicious, accompanied by a delicious CDP French wine. Great wine list, rather more Pinot’s than I have ever seen on a wine list! Excellent food all round. Can’t go wrong.

We enjoyed it here but with a few caveats. The food was lovely. The onion soup was probably the best I’ve ever tasted. Very rich with superb flavour. The cassoulet was good but frankly a bit large for me and almost too rich and a bit overdone for something I’ve always seen as a rustic dish. The talk around the table from my companions was largely the same. Lovely food but with the serves a little too hefty. The wine list was good and we chose a few nice wines. The service was lovely throughout. I’d happily come here again but might choose a different main

Everything we ordered was delicious! Highly recommend the gnocchi and snapper. They even make their own ketchup with really rustic style fries. The service was great too and loved the aesthetic of the place. Will definitely return!

Unfortunately my hapuka fish dish didn’t quite make the grade imho. It smelt very fishy on arrival. Still, that smell could have been the mess of anchovies on top, which completely drowned the taste. By the time you add on sides, it was an expensive dish - which should have worked better.

Prior to COVID this used to be one of my favourite restaurants. However last night, my steak was terrible - poorly cooked and the sauce/gravy tasted like gravox. My wife didn't finish her Tartare it was so bad. How the mighty have fallen
