Hong Kong after dark is neon on wet tarmac, a tram grinding along Hennessy Road, the smell of roast goose and wonton noodles from a shopfront that never seems to close. Behind it all, the gay cruising scene keeps a low profile: a lift in an ordinary tenement block, a buzzer, an unmarked door, and on the other side a locker, a towel and a dark maze. In this city, cruising means the sauna. There are no men's cruise bars or porn cinemas that we could find in 2026, apps do most of the matchmaking, and the year has been shaped by mpox, with HuTong in Mong Kok, one of the largest saunas, closed twice on health advice. Here is what was running in 2026, and how to stay safe and on the right side of the law.
Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal since 1991 and the age of consent is equal, but there is no same-sex marriage or partnership register: the Court of Final Appeal ordered a framework in September 2023, and the Legislative Council rejected the government's bill on 10 September 2025 by 71 votes to 14. Saunas operate openly as private venues for adults; sex in a public place is an offence for everyone.
How cruising works in Hong Kong
Space is the city's scarcest resource. Most men live with family or in small flats, so for decades the saunas have been where gay men meet, and most of them have a darkroom (locals often say 黑房, "black room"), a maze or private cabins. They sit on upper floors or in basements in Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and North Point on Hong Kong Island and in Mong Kok and Jordan in Kowloon. Prices are age-tiered, so bring ID, and bring cash. The Island venues are the easiest for visitors, with some English spoken and a mix of locals and expats; the Kowloon venues are more local and Cantonese-speaking.
Outside the saunas, most men meet on Grindr and similar apps. The gay bars around SoHo, Lan Kwai Fong and Sheung Wan are social bars for a drink, a chat and a drag show, not cruising venues.
The saunas, briefly
Full details, prices and opening hours are in our Hong Kong saunas guide. These are the cruising highlights.
Soda · 1/F, Overseas Building, 417 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai
The former Action Sauna is the play-oriented option on the Island: a large dark room, a maze, a sling room, private cabins, a dry sauna and a steam room. It's listed as open 24 hours; visitors report about HK$160, with a much cheaper youth rate, and several say it's cash only. Reviews from 2025 and 2026 are mixed, with complaints about broken showers, indoor smoking and an older crowd alongside praise for the staff and layout.
CE Sauna · 2/F, 37–43 Cochrane Street, Central (entrance on Gage Street)
Running since 1991 by the Mid-Levels escalator, with a small maze, private cabins, dry sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. The website lists 13:00–23:00 and HK$150 standard entry, less for younger age bands, with a free buffet. Small, dated and friendly, with the most mixed crowd of locals, expats and travellers.
Gateway · 1/F, Kwong Ah Building, 114 Thomson Road, Wan Chai
Gay-only, cleaner and roomier than most, with a maze, free rest cabins, jacuzzi and a cold plunge pool. Listed hours are 14:00–00:00 Monday to Friday and 13:00–00:00 at weekends; visitors report about HK$150. Busy at weekends.
My Way · 4/F, Kuo Wah Building, 340 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai
Listed with a dark room, private cabins and nude nights. The website advertises a weekday early-bird entry of HK$70 before 17:00 for Hong Kong ID holders only; hours aren't published, so call +852 2574 9098.
Chaps · Basement, 15 Ming Yuen Western Street, North Point
Men-only, with a video room, private rooms and a dress code for every night on its website, from underwear and jockstrap nights to mask and nude nights. It lists HK$128 and opening until 01:00, overnight on Fridays and Saturdays, but its latest dated news is from 2020, so call +852 2570 9339 first. Recent reviews call it old and overpriced.
Manly Sauna · 1/F, Haven Mansion, 108 Woosung Street, Jordan
A newer, bear-oriented listing with a dark room, a dorm and private rooms. A handful of 2026 reviews describe it as brand new, but we found no independent source for its hours or prices; call +852 2335 5108 before going.
Closed or uncertain:
- HuTong (胡同), Kar Wong Building, 639–645 Shanghai Street, Mong Kok, entrance on Fife Street: the large sauna with a dark maze and theme nights was closed from 26 May 2026 after two men with mpox were found to have visited, with five linked cases by June. It reopened over the summer, then the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) advised it to close from 13 October 2026 after a 39-year-old man with mpox reported several visits and sexual contact with strangers there. No reopening date had been announced at the time of writing.
- Big Top Gym & Sauna (2/F, Ka Wo Building, 687–689 Nathan Road, Mong Kok) was marked closed by Time Out Hong Kong in 2023 and later reported reopened; we found no recent review confirming it is operating.
- 採熊館, a Mong Kok bear sauna, was marked closed by Time Out.
- Equal law, no special gay offence: section 118F(1) of the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200) once made sex between men "otherwise than in private" a crime. In Secretary for Justice v Yau Yuk Lung (17 July 2007), arising from two men found having sex in a car parked by a dark road in 2004, the Court of Final Appeal struck it down as discriminatory, because there was no equivalent offence for heterosexual couples.
- Outraging public decency: sex anyone might see in a public place can still be prosecuted as the offence of outraging public decency, which carries up to seven years in prison. In October 2025 police arrested a couple in their sixties for a sex act on a Cheung Chau pier.
- Indecent exposure: exposing yourself in public is a separate offence under section 4(28) of the Summary Offences Ordinance (Cap. 228); the South China Morning Post has reported an elderly man arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure for exercising naked in a public park.
- Robbery and blackmail: quiet paths, stairwells and strangers' flats are where thieves look for men who won't go to the police. Carry your phone, one card and a little cash.
- App dates: meet first in a bar or café, share your location with a friend, and never hand over your unlocked phone.
- Drugs: Drug offences are prosecuted seriously in Hong Kong. Never carry anything for anyone, and if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol.
- Emergency: call 999 for police, fire or ambulance.
- Entry and ID: prices are age-tiered and some offers are for Hong Kong ID holders only. Bring your passport if you want an age discount, and bring cash in Hong Kong dollars: some venues don't take cards.
- Lockers and phones: leave your passport and spare cards at the hotel, lock everything you bring, and never take photos inside.
- Consent: "no" is enough, in any room, at any time. M̀h hóu (唔好) means "don't".
- PrEP and PEP: if a condom breaks or you have a high-risk exposure, see a doctor or go to a hospital emergency department at once: PEP must start within 72 hours, and under CHP guidance it is treated as an exceptional measure, so explain clearly what happened. AIDS Concern offers free HIV testing, self-test kits and a PrEP check-up and medication service at its MY PLACE centre, which moved on 15 July 2026 to Flat B, 18/F, Hua Chiao Commercial Centre, 678 Nathan Road, Mong Kok (Mong Kok MTR, exit D1); call +852 2394 6677. The Department of Health's Integrated Treatment Centre in Yau Ma Tei also provides sexual health services.
- Getting there and home: tap in on the MTR with an Octopus card, which also pays at convenience stores. Trains stop running around 01:00, so check last-train times for your line; after that, night buses (route numbers starting with N) and taxis take over. Red taxis serve the urban areas, green ones the New Territories and blue ones Lantau Island. Have your hotel's name and address in Chinese to show the driver.
- Apps: Grindr is widely used.
- Tùhng ji (同志) – gay, literally "comrade".
- Sōng nàh (桑拿) – sauna. Mòuh gān (毛巾) – towel.
- Géi dō chín? (幾多錢?) – how much is it?
- Sān fán jing (身份證) – ID card.
- Ōn chyùhn tou (安全套) – condom.
- M̀h hóu (唔好) – don't. M̀h sái la (唔使喇) – no thanks, no need.
- M̀h gōi (唔該) – thanks (for a service) / excuse me.
- Náaih chàh (奶茶) – milk tea.
Cruise bars, cinemas and parties
Unlike Tokyo or Bangkok, Hong Kong has no dedicated men's cruise bar or darkroom club that we could confirm in 2026, and we found no gay adult cinema or sex shop with video cabins. If you want a drink first, the long-running gay bars are social places: Time Bar (rear of 65 Hollywood Road, entrance on Man Hing Lane), Petticoat Lane (8/F, California Tower, 30–32 D'Aguilar Street, known for drag shows) and FLM (62 Jervois Street, Sheung Wan). These listings date from 2023–2025, so check their social media first.
Private parties are a different matter. Group sex and chill-out sessions in hotel rooms and flats are advertised on apps, and in 2026 they came up in the CHP's mpox investigations: Hong Kong media reported that one patient in the spring cluster had visited HuTong and also taken part in group sex in a hotel. These parties are unlicensed, often involve drugs, and offer none of the protection of a staffed venue. If you go, know who is hosting, tell a friend where you are, and read the safety notes below.
Mpox in 2026. The CHP recorded 31 mpox cases in the first nine and a half months of 2026, 22 of them since August, and all of Hong Kong's 115 cases since 2022 have been in men. Genetic analysis points to several transmission chains among men who have sex with men. The Department of Health offers the mpox vaccine to higher-risk groups at its clinics, including the Yau Ma Tei Integrated Treatment Centre (7/F, Yau Ma Tei Jockey Club Clinic, 145 Canton Road), and ran extra outreach sessions in October. Anyone who visited HuTong on or after 14 September 2026 is asked to call the CHP mpox hotline on 2125 2373. If you develop a rash, fever or swollen glands, see a doctor and say where you've been.
Outdoors and in public
Hong Kong is a city of public toilets, country parks and beaches, and some have a long reputation among men looking for each other. We don't send you to any of them. They are busy public spaces, police act on complaints, and the city has licensed alternatives open every day. For daytime sun, Middle Bay and South Bay on the south side of Hong Kong Island are described by Travel Gay as popular with gay men at weekends: they are social beaches for swimming and sunbathing, not for sex.
The law and your safety:
A Hong Kong night, the local way
Start in a cha chaan teng, the Hong Kong-style café, with a silky náaih chàh (milk tea strained through a cloth "stocking") and a bo lo bao, the pineapple bun that contains no pineapple, split and stuffed with a slab of cold butter. For dinner, roast goose or char siu over rice, or a hotpot that runs late. After the sauna, the classic way home is a bowl of wonton noodles or a jūk (congee) in Wan Chai or Mong Kok, where some noodle shops stay open into the small hours.
Practical tips
Pride and events
Hong Kong Pride is usually held in November. For 2026 the organisers announced a free Rainbow Market at Central Market on Saturday 14 November (12:00–19:00), under the theme "Step Out for All, Show Up With Pride". In mid-October, local media reported that Central Market had withdrawn the booking, with the operator blaming an administrative error that had let the same date to two events; the organisers said they would announce new arrangements in due course. Check their website and social media before you plan around it. The last street march was in 2018.
It has been a hard year for the community calendar: Pink Dot HK, which the South China Morning Post describes as the city's largest LGBTQ carnival, was due on 14 June 2026 at Stanley Plaza and Murray House, but was called off in May, for the second year running, after the property manager withdrew its venue offer citing licensing issues. In November 2023, Hong Kong co-hosted the Gay Games with Guadalajara.

Frequently asked questions
Where is gay cruising in Hong Kong?
Almost all of it happens in the gay saunas, which have darkrooms, mazes and cabins. Soda on Hennessy Road is the most play-oriented, and CE Sauna in Central, Gateway and My Way in Wan Chai and Chaps in North Point also have dark areas. Outside the saunas, most men meet on apps.
Are there darkroom or cruise bars in Hong Kong?
We found no dedicated cruise bar or darkroom club operating in Hong Kong in 2026. The gay bars of Central, SoHo and Sheung Wan are social bars, and the darkrooms are inside the saunas. Private parties are advertised on apps, but they are unlicensed and have been linked to mpox cases.
Is HuTong sauna in Mong Kok open?
No. The Centre for Health Protection advised it to close from 13 October 2026 after a man with mpox reported several visits, its second closure of the year after a cluster of five cases in May and June. No reopening date had been announced at the time of writing.
Is outdoor cruising legal in Hong Kong?
Sex between men in private is legal, but sex in a public place is not, for anyone. Police arrest people for outraging public decency, which can carry up to seven years in prison, and indecent exposure is a separate offence. Stick to the licensed saunas.
When is Hong Kong Pride 2026?
Hong Kong Pride planned a free Rainbow Market at Central Market on Saturday 14 November 2026, but the venue withdrew the booking in October, citing a double booking. The organisers promised to announce new arrangements, so check their website and social media before you go.
