Hong Kong Bar

Hong Kong Bar is Penang's oldest pub, established in 1920. The walls are covered with old photos and insignia, and Tiger Beer is ice-cold and reasonably priced. Jenny usually brings fruit with enthusiasm, and the guestbook and photo album add a touch of warmth. On occasional rest days, service is slow, the TV news drowns out the nostalgia, and parking is difficult. Still worth a visit, and I hope to meet Jenny's warm smile again next time.

Make sure to stop in and have a drink with Jenny and sign the guestbook! Chill no frills bar with lots of interesting history. Great to relax with a beer and read the old guests books.

Most bars you go to have a pre-packaged aesthetic intended to evoke a mood. They’re products of interior decorating intended to provide a consumer experience. A must visit for a beer! Oldest bar on the island lady is very talkative and has a lot of knowledge on the area and bars 100 year history. Like stepping back it time

Honk Kong bar is the last bastion of pub culture, with a proud and long heritage. The owner's have been a stron supporter of Australian Defense Force members throughout the years, with memorabilia dating back to the 80s and with every new rotation of Australian soldiers brining their own stickers, flags, plaques and pieces of uniform to be displayed. At the beginning and end of every quarterly rotation you are likely to run into soldiers from all over Australia who are more than happy to exchange stories, and get on the beers with new friends. On a more civilian focus, the owners love getting photos with every group that visits, and keeps them in readily available photo books, with another notebook within which she encourages visitors to leave notes. The beers is cold, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. I would recommend this bar to anyone looking to explore the history of Australian military personnel within Malaysia, or just to have a beer in a homely pub.
