Oscar Wilde's Tomb — Père Lachaise

A must-see on any tour of the most famous tombs is that of the brilliant writer Oscar Wilde. Yours has an Art Deco style, with a highly stylized yet imposing angel. For years, this tomb was covered in red lipstick kisses as a good luck ritual. Then the family put up signs warning that cleaning is a private responsibility and separated it from intrusive indiscretions with a transparent plexiglass panel, a new target for kisses. Many also leave tissues with the imprint of the kiss. Many fans leave lipsticks, lip balms, and lip glosses themselves, as well as letters, messages to Oscar, and packets of... condoms (hopefully not used here).

I only came to Père-Lachaise cemetary very quickly as it wasn't on my original schedule. A shame I couldn't stay longer though. My sole purpose was to visit and see Oscar Wilde's grave, and I found it very easily after entering through Door/Gate Gambetta. The alleys were very clean, however Oscar Wilde's tomb is protected by a glass, yet a lot of people find it amusing to press their lips on it and dity the protection glass... I found it quite sad and disorienting... The tomb is huge. And as I saw that people put some papers through the glass, to fall near the tomb, I added a note I wrote as my emotions got the best of me. My only regret is that I didn't think about buying a rose before 🥺 «To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people only exist, that is all.» - O.W.

"Alien tears will fill for him Pity's long-broken urn For his mourners will be outcast men And outcasts always mourn" Beautifully apt excerpt of a poem, engraved on the tomb and written by Wilde himself. I hope somehow he knew he'd be mourned long after his death by all those that see themselves in his work.

What’s wrong with people. Dumping their lipsticks on someone’s grave is not cute. It’s a lot of trash on the bottom of his grave stone now. I do not believe that book readers did this.

The legendary grave of Oscar Wilde. My favorite book is "Dorian Gray." The grave is now surrounded by plexiglass, a necessary measure to prevent people from kissing the stone (there were many lipstick stains). The monument has been cleaned and fenced off. Believe me, kissing the pedestal will bring you happiness in love and success in business. Behind the glass fence are many notes, lipsticks, balms, and keychains. I highly recommend visiting. There are always lots of people around.
