Sauna Thermos on the Raamstraat — a short canal walk from Leidseplein — is the most celebrated gay sauna in the Netherlands and one of the best in Europe. The multi-level facility has been operating for over four decades and has been refurbished and expanded over that time to a standard that few other European gay saunas match. The facilities include Finnish dry sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, multiple darkrooms across different floors, private cabins, a relaxation area, and a full café-bar that serves food and drinks. The café is an unexpectedly social space — there is a specific Amsterdam-gay-sauna culture of sitting at the bar in a towel drinking coffee and having actual conversations that Thermos has perfected. The sauna operates 24 hours on Friday and Saturday nights, making it a destination for the early-morning hours after the clubs close. Thursday evenings are popular with locals; weekend afternoons draw a mix of visitors and regulars. Clean, well-maintained, professionally staffed, and serious about its role as a community space.
