Wijk Castle is marketed as a possible "castle stay". The castle-like main building itself is included in pictures and descriptions as a main attraction, and of course it would be strange otherwise. The building is described by historians as unique, and it is a tickling eye-catcher where it rises high and impressive in the landscape, and in the imagination it is easy to imagine the view from the Knights' Hall on the top floor and impressive fireplaces or other things that belong to a castle. But this excitement is not available as a guest at Wijk, the castle is just an eye-catcher. It is true that you can read about the castle's exciting history, both in the book that the business has produced, and of course on the web. But to read about this you don't have to go on the long, narrow and winding roads that lead there. You can do that at home. It's a bit of a shame, because the potential is there, if the business just chooses to show it off *). Well, in the name of justice, it must be said that you actually got to enter the castle. Deep down in the basement (no view there) to eat breakfast. Which brings us to breakfast, the most important meal of the day according to some. And not least important here, where there are no other alternative places to eat within a reasonable distance. It was good, the breakfast, but there were also shortcomings. However, let me first point out the goodies: good and strong coffee! A rich smoothie made with our own (I think) berries, also a strong ginger shot that got the spirits going. Plus an exciting selection of homemade bread. But you should have something on the bread too, and not just cheese and cold cuts, but preferably something sweet too. My standard breakfast also includes the occasional jam sandwich, but there was no jam to be found. Well, a toast with honey then? No, hardly that either. After a lot of searching, next to the teacups I found one of the smallest honey jars I've ever seen. Hardly intended for sandwiches, but it had to do. Otherwise, there was the expected range of porridge, eggs and yoghurt, so you didn't have to leave breakfast hungry. *) Those of you reading this may be wondering how it is that I still seem to be aware that there is actually a Knight's Hall and an impressive fireplace to show off in the castle, if the business should choose to do so... well, I rounded the small barrier and pawed my way up into the castle, whether I was allowed in or not. Have I now gotten here so... And it was actually impressive, and worth showing off, what was up there. Once you've made it to Wijk, you're far from things like convenience stores or somewhere to buy an evening pizza or whatever you might be craving after a long day's journey to your overnight stay. It doesn't come as a surprise, if you just look at the map you'll understand, and maybe have packed something that could be a little evening snack before it's time to sleep. We had done that. Although unfortunately there was no infrastructure from the accommodation side to meet with, such as a plate or two, a couple of tea mugs, a small kettle maybe and some cutlery. (Okay, maybe I'm spoiled, I usually stay at B&Bs where it is a rule that such things are available). A bit strange I can still think, since it was probably a student dormitory we were placed in, there is usually some kind of shared kitchenette. The student dormitory feeling was reinforced by the noticeably small rooms, rooms that are probably intended for one person. When they were sold as double rooms - at a double room price - with a sofa bed made up, it became quite cramped. Well, it was clean anyway
