A very beautiful place surrounded by nature. The hotel looks very nice from the outside, but the interior leaves something to be desired. The service is terrible.

Loved the old atmosphere, reminded me of being back in a military mess devour wise , and it was in the war, nice wildlife about, especially peacocks. Shame the bar didn't serve cask ale

Brilliant stay, staff were very friendly and understanding, the room was not quite ready at 3 as they had a lot of check outs but they pointed us to a onsite play park which the kids were ecstatic about after a long drive the rooms for clean I'm well put together I think a lot of the bad reviews are people expecting 5 star pristine hotel but don't understand that the hotel is quite old and the are cheap. I actually heard one person complain about the wallpaper in their room and another complain that they were renovating the room next to theirs you can't win would stay again

We stayed one night 24 May Bank Holiday as part of a Timewell Cartmel Races trip, and this was our third stay in as many years. On this occasion it was sad to find the hotel almost empty, and I noted a lot of familiar visitors were not staying at this time - Cost of living crises I suppose. However it was even more disappointing to find the hotel had adjusted to this fall off in a negative manner. So that when our party of 3 returned to the hotel at 10.55pm we found the Bar closed and in darkness. The two staff on reception had no intention of allowing us a nightcap. This is not the facility or welcome expected of a hotel, esp on a bank holiday weekend. It was Funereal! But we should have guessed that the positive experience of recent years has changed when at Dinner we found the food almost inedible. I would guess most of the roast dinner was reheated frozen, and cheap, nonsense and apart from the meat I doubt the chef had any real part in its preparation. I must say, however, the breakfast was tasty and enjoyable. Relieved to find at least standards have not fallen that low. But for the lack of facility, or ambiance, we will not be returning, and at the return bank holiday races in August our party will be staying elsewhere - probably in Cartmel. Good Luck!

Nice clean room, helpful staff and a fantastic building a few minutes walk from Grange over sands shops etc.

Positives would be a good location with great view, nice grounds, spacious room and friendly staff. However we felt it was vastly over rated and over priced. (£170 for a family room for 1 night B&b). The wall paper in our room (and most communal areas) was torn, stained and literally hanging off the wall, our room carpet needed vacuuming, the bathroom floor and radiator was grim, the table in the room hadn’t been cleaned, the windows were filthy (like you wouldn’t touch), a light didn’t work, there was a stain on the bed covers and the sink was cracked. As a gimmick they keep a pet peacock which lives directly next to the hotel which is cute until you realise that it calls literally all day and so is a 5am alarm call. It was like staying in the hotel that time forgot (think very dilapidated Manor House in need of a charity to take it on!) and is a budget option at best. Very glad we were only here for 1 night.

This hotel would have been fabulous in its heyday. It’s grand with spectacular views and huge rooms. It’s stunning. But it’s hasn’t been maintained. The white gloss woodwork is all faded yellow with age. The stunning wrought iron balcony needs painting and the black chip in the white enamel bath looks ugly and just needs a quick fix. Easy, simple fixes just to stay on top of the room maintenance which would make it more memorable. The price reflected the slightly shabby decor and it is a lovely, friendly, welcoming, comfortable and warm hotel ( not droughty as you may expect without double glazing) I would stay there again, without reservation, but I just wanted to get a paintbrush out and start bringing it back to it’s undoubted former glory. Stay here for comfort, spectacular views, huge rooms with high ceilings but don’t expect luxury ( except for the hugely thick white towels- fab) There was a tea and coffee station in the room with free top ups which was appreciated.
