Kick Ass Greyfriars

I stayed at this hostel once before, around 2012. Unfortunately, it seems to have deteriorated since then. The room was decent and clean. But it was quite loud, because of the bar next door. The bathrooms are the bigger problem though. Most of the bathrooms and showers are for men and women together. The bathroom, that was only for women was unclean, there was mold and it was quite difficult to shower without getting everything wet. Towels are 3.5£, lockers for luggage storage are 3£ and the breakfast is 6£. To me the breakfast was almost the best part. It is a very small buffet, but it had everything I needed to start in the day. The location of the hostel is the biggest plus.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ 4/5 We stayed at Kick Ass in Edinburgh in a private twin room and, for the price, it was excellent value for money. The room was comfortable, clean and offered plenty of privacy. The shared shower and toilet facilities were plentiful, well maintained, and always clean during our stay. The hot water was instant and reliable, which was a welcome bonus after a long day exploring the city. The hostel itself has a great social atmosphere, and most of the staff were friendly, welcoming and inclusive, helping to create a relaxed environment for guests. My only minor criticism relates to one member of the night reception team. When we returned one evening and asked whether the bar was still open, the response was simply, “I work on reception, I don’t know.” While I appreciate he may not have been directly involved with the bar, a quick enquiry or update would have been helpful given it’s all part of the same venue. On another evening, we said hello when returning and received no response at all, which felt a little odd in what is otherwise a very sociable and friendly hostel. That said, this was a small issue in an otherwise very enjoyable stay. The location, facilities, cleanliness and value for money were all excellent, and I would happily stay here again when visiting Edinburgh.

Location is unbeatable, minutes walk from the main attractions. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. The room was okay, bed wasn't too bad. Bathrooms seem to get cleaned 3-4 times a day, but does not look clean at any given moment. Overall pretty decent.

had a pretty unsatisfactory stay at this hostel. the only positive was its location and proximity to all the attractions but apart from that, 1. the toilets and showers were quite bad. the shower area was way too small with no space to keep any of your own soap, the drain in one of the showers was clogged so the water was leaking out of the bathroom into the common area, and one of the showers also had mold in it. one of the toilets also wouldn’t flush. 2. one of the receptionists was quite unhelpful when we asked him how to get to arthur’s seat. overall not a great experience, and definitely wouldn’t recommend staying in this place. there are better hostels out there.

They try to run a hostel, but the space right downstairs is a bar with incredibly loud music all day and well into the night. So, if you want to relax after a long day exploring Edinburgh, this isn't the place for you. If you just want to drink, get drunk, meet people, and stay up late, then I'd say it's more suitable. The soundproofing in the rooms is terrible, with broken windows or windows that don't close properly. Besides the noise from the bar downstairs, the noise from other nearby clubs and pubs is very unpleasant.

Central.location in Old Town. Very clean, comfortable beds, and secure. They have 24 hours reception staff and they are very helpful. Thank you froma very satisfied customer

Typical hostel issues except the bed I was in was a top bunk, directly in front of an extremely bright emergency exit sign. Made it really hard to sleep. The shower kept switching between icy cold and scalding hot every 30 seconds. At least they had body wash. It was pretty clean.

A mixed experience at this hostel. The mattresses are cheap with springs, and it was very hot in the rooms even though it was only about 20 degrees Celsius outside. The showers are very small, sometimes dirty, and there are no hooks for your belongings. Breakfast is meager. On the other hand, the location is excellent, the staff are friendly, and the common areas are nice.

Exceptional location. Friendly staff. Clean Rooms. Good value. All you need for a great hostel experience in a busy city. Additional star for a pub located at the facilities with seating outside. 4/5 as toilet/shower cleaning has to improve for a trully 5/5.
