Casa Colonial Beach and Spa, an SLH Hotel

To me, this is by far, the best hotel in Puerto Plata (Playa Dorada area) if you are looking for a curated space. But if you're looking for a vibrant, party-resort this is not then the right place for you. The staff, the well-maintained surroundings, the cleanliness of the beach (no sargassum), food (with a variety of options nearby). For a fine taste person who enjoys slow traveling and cares about quality and silence luxury in general, this is for you.

We originally planned to stay two nights at Casa Colonial Beach & Spa, but due to bad weather at our arrival airport, we had to extend our stay by two additional nights. In hindsight, this turned out to be a blessing—we had a wonderful time. The rooms are very spacious, spotless, and well maintained. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with fresh fruit in the room, which was a nice touch. Housekeeping was done daily, along with an evening turndown service. The only small improvement we would suggest concerns the balcony furniture—the chairs are quite small and not very comfortable, especially considering the generous size of the balcony. Service throughout the hotel was outstanding. From the moment we arrived, every interaction—with the front desk, waiters, bartenders, and beach staff—was warm, professional, and genuinely friendly. This level of service made a real difference and elevated our overall experience. We enjoyed breakfast, lunches, and a few dinners at the hotel. Breakfast and lunch were good, and on request, they prepared excellent espressos in the morning. We had dinner several times at Restaurant Lucia. While the setting and service are great, it is presented as fine dining, which in our opinion it is not. The portions are quite large, and the food ranges from decent to good, but it doesn’t quite reach fine dining level. That said, the service there was excellent and the staff went out of their way to make each evening enjoyable. The beach is beautiful, well maintained, and not overcrowded. There are plenty of clean and comfortable beach beds. The ocean water was somewhat murky during our stay—likely due to recent rainfall—but the overall setting is still very appealing, with palm trees surrounding the bay and creating a great view. All in all, we had a fantastic stay. It’s one of those places where you truly feel that you get what you pay for. We would definitely return.

This is a 5-star property in most every respect. The rooms, cleanliness, and service were excellent. The grounds are pristine. The architecture is nothing short of breathtaking, and every minor detail, from what you see upon entering the property to how you experience nature right outside your room, is accounted for. You’re walking down a perfectly curated museum when you pace the halls. You’ll see the most beautiful pottery when having dinner. Every employee will bend over backwards to help you, in a way that was almost suffocating (I prefer quick / casual interactions), but I can see this being a pro for most people. Casa Colonial deserves praise, but I’d only recommend it for a very specific sort of traveler. This is a remote beach resort in a decaying tourism complex with nothing to do nearby and nowhere to go. It’s a quiet resort—there’s no entertainment and rarely any music. This property is for the traveler who knows they’ll want to do beach, pool, and nothing else. The problem is if the weather turns, your vacation is ruined. The gastronomy isn’t great. The food is good, but after one day, it’s tiring. The onsite restaurant serves the same food every day. The tourism complex where it’s located is borderline depressing, so you don’t have a ton of restaurant options, either. I think it’d be good for the Lucia menu to rotate, or for the hotel to arrange for day tours or local culinary experiences. I’d have appreciated a drying rack in the room for bathing suits. The steam room could use some washing or essential oils. And I did see a rat outside the Lucia restaurant, which was concerning. Everything else was exceptional. The towel bathrobes were lovely, and the spa was pretty good, too. I don’t trust hotel spas, and to be honest I didn’t trust this one, but I didn’t feel like I wasted my money. I recommend it primarily for honeymooners or very, very rich people with money to spare. I don’t recommend it for families (your kids will get bored) or for travelers who want a mix of beach, city, and culture. Is it the worth the money? For me, a person who likes a bit of city, no; for a couple who wants to relax in one place, probably yes.
