Visited on a Sunday night for a casual dinner and some great live jazz by La Cuchina and the food, service and especially the music were absolutely fantastic. My friend is a jazz aficionado and comes here often, but it was my first time and have to say the place is truly one of a kind. Historic, friendly staff, classy audience that really appreciates great live music, and very reasonable prices. Can't wait to return!
Great food and cocktails!
Overall a solid experience at the Deer Head Inn, but I'd only recommend it if you're into jazz. Otherwise, there isn't much draw. The rooms are priced like a standard hotel, but without the comfort and amenities you'd normally expect. A few downsides worth mentioning: parts of the building could use some renovation, and the air conditioning is loud enough to make sleeping difficult, it sounds like having a car idling right there in the room. This is the first place we've stayed where we've run into that. We also had a rough start going down for a concert. The interior staircase opens directly onto the performance room, and some people were seated right by the door; when it opened, it bumped into their chairs, earning us a dirty look from an older woman in the audience. Not the best way to start the evening. That said, the service and food were excellent, the waitress was efficient, attentive, and the dishes were genuinely above average. One thing to watch out for: the cost of the concert ticket is sometimes added to the final bill, which skews the tip percentage for the server. We still left 20%, though a bit reluctantly, given that soft drinks are served by the glass but refills are charged separately, something we've never seen in food service before. If they're going to charge per drink, they should serve the full bottle at the table (a bottle of Coke, for example), if it's poured by the glass, refills should be included. It's a real letdown and honestly feels like a bit of a rip-off, I've seen other reviewers mention getting caught out by the same thing. Bottom line: a jazz club's reputation alone may not be enough to make the inn itself worth staying at.
A truly unique jazz experience. We went on Jam Night and the variety and quality of performers was amazing. And, dinner was great! (Not always the case at jazz clubs.) We had stuffed manicotti and a chicken and chickpea tagine. There are vegetarian options. The building is - umm, historic and feeling its age. We stayed in one of the quaint rooms on the 3rd floor. The trip up involves a lot of stairs and some slightly uneven floorboards. The rooms are small but nicely painted and decorated and are quiet and comfortable. We have been coming to the Deer Head occasionally since the 1980s and have seen a lot of changes. The jazz has always been stellar. Today, it is also a nice place to dine and stay.
Great music and food
