À propos de ce lieu GLBT Historical Society Museum

Opened in January 2011 in a Castro storefront, the GLBT Historical Society Museum was the first stand-alone museum of LGBTQ history in the United States, and only the second in the world after Berlin's Schwules Museum. The collection behind it is staggering: the GLBT Historical Society, founded in 1985, holds one of the world's largest queer archives — hundreds of oral histories, roughly a thousand hours each of audio and film, and personal effects that include Harvey Milk's belongings and the sewing machine on which Gilbert Baker made the first rainbow flags. The galleries rotate exhibitions drawn from these holdings, telling San Francisco's queer story from Gold Rush cross-dressers to AIDS activism and beyond. The museum's location earns it a place on any Castro walk: it sits on 18th Street steps from the corner of Castro, two blocks from Harvey Milk Plaza and around the corner from the Rainbow Honor Walk plaques. Visiting: open Tuesday through Sunday, roughly 11am to 5pm with a midday pause, closed Mondays; admission about $10 (free first Wednesdays). The museum is volunteer-dependent and hours can shift — check glbthistory.org before making a special trip. The society's research archives are held separately downtown and serve researchers by appointment. For a traveler with one indoor hour in the Castro, this is the hour: the neighborhood's street-level history, curated by the people who lived and preserved it.
