Bilbao in the late afternoon: the txirimiri drizzle on the Gran Vía, steam rising from the pavements, office workers heading for a txikito and a pintxo before dinner. A few streets from Moyúa, men slip into a doorway on Costa Kalea; across town, others take the escalator into the Zabalburu shopping galleries, past the closed shops, to the door at the end. That's most of Bilbao's cruising scene in 2026: two gay saunas, a fetish night or two. The darkroom bars that once sat in Bilbao La Vieja have mostly gone, so if you're coming from Madrid or Barcelona, adjust your expectations and plan around the saunas.

Legal in one line: Spain has had same-sex marriage since 2005, and saunas and cruise venues are legal, licensed businesses for adults. Sex in public is only a crime if minors or people with disabilities are present (Criminal Code art. 185), but "obscene exhibition" is a minor offence under the public security law, Ley Orgánica 4/2015 (art. 37.5), with a fine of €100–600 (art. 39.1).

The saunas: where Bilbao cruises

Bilbao has two gay saunas, both on the Ensanche side of the river rather than in the old town. Both have darkrooms, cabins and cruising areas, so in practice they double as the city's cruise clubs. See also our Bilbao saunas page.

Sauna Element · Costa Kalea 8–10

Sauna Element is on Costa Kalea (Calle Costa) in Abando, a few minutes' walk from Moyúa metro station. Spanish listings describe it as exclusively gay, at about 650 m², with a dry sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, showers, private cabins, a darkroom and a café-bar. Nomadic Boys' 2026 Bilbao guide lists it as open, with a mixed crowd of locals and visitors. A 2024 listing gives the hours as Monday to Friday 16:00–22:00, Saturday 15:00 to 02:30 and Sunday 16:00–22:00, which makes Saturday its late night. Older listings put entry at about €15; expect it to be a little more now, and check before you go.

Sauna Ego · Nicolás Alcorta Kalea 3 (Zabalburu)

Sauna Ego is the larger of the two, at almost 1,000 m², and is reached through the galleries of the Plaza Zabalburu shopping centre, near Zabalburu and San Mamés. Listings describe a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, thermal showers, a big labyrinth with cabins, a darkroom, a video room, glory holes, slings, a "hard" area and a bar. Current listings give the hours as Thursday to Sunday, 16:00 to 23:00, though older ones show daily opening and all-night sessions at weekends, and one 2026 listing adds that hours may vary. We could not confirm its 2026 timetable independently, so phone 944 700 777 before you set off. Prices are not published.

Cruise bars and darkrooms

Bilbao no longer has a dedicated cruise bar. The bear bar with a darkroom in Bilbao La Vieja seems to have closed (see below), and the Barrenkale bars in the old town are social places for drinks and dancing, covered in our Bilbao bars guide.

High (Bilbao La Vieja)

High, at Naja Kalea 3 (Naxa) in Bilbao La Vieja, is a grungy club and cocktail bar with a varied crowd that, according to a Spanish listings site, includes plenty of bears. It hosts electronic DJ sessions, concerts, cabaret and queer parties, and has been listed with a darkroom area. That listing dates from 2020, so treat the darkroom as unconfirmed and check High's social media for the next queer night.

Fetish nights

Fetish happens as one-off nights rather than in a permanent club. The Basque LGBT magazine Revista Blue reports that Pavoneo (Barrenkale 13) runs themed nights that have included a Fetish Night with local drag performers. Bilbao in Black, a gay leather and fetish weekend with dinners, a boat party and an official night party, has been held in mid-May in past years; we found no confirmed dates for 2027, so check its channels in spring.

Sex shops and cinemas

We found no sex shop with video cabins or porn cinema in Bilbao that we could confirm as operating in 2025–26. If you're looking for that kind of place, the saunas' video rooms are the nearest equivalent.

Closed or unconfirmed:

    • The Santu Bear (Dos de Mayo 8, Bilbao La Vieja): a bear bar with a darkroom and a small shop, still listed in some guides. A Spanish site carried a 2020 comment saying it had closed, and Google reviewers in 2022 and 2023 said the same. We found no recent sign that it trades.
    • Badulake (Hernani Kalea 10): the cabaret bar was a social venue rather than a cruise bar, but it was a fixture of late nights in San Francisco. Nomadic Boys reported it closed in July 2026, with the name kept for one-off events.

    Practical tips

    • Entry and ID: the saunas charge a single entry fee that normally includes a locker and towel; bring photo ID. Neither publishes a current price list, so ask at the desk.
    • Lockers and phones: lock up your phone and wallet. Don't take them into the labyrinths or darkrooms in an open pocket.
    • Dress code: towel only in the saunas. For fetish nights, check the theme on the event's social media before you go.
    • Consent: a hand moved away means no. Darkroom etiquette is the same here as anywhere.
    • Chemsex: never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol. If someone collapses, call 112.
    • PrEP and PEP: PrEP is available through the Spanish public health system. After a risk, Spain's Ministry of Health advises going to a hospital urgencias (A&E) department: PEP can be started within 72 hours, ideally within the first 6, and lasts 28 days. In Bilbao, the public Hospital Universitario Basurto has an emergency department. The local LGBTI+ association Ortzadar can point you to sexual-health information and support.
    • Getting home: Metro Bilbao runs from 06:00 to 23:00 Monday to Thursday, until 02:00 on Friday nights, and all night from Saturday into Sunday and on the eves of public holidays, every 15 minutes on the shared central section and every 30 minutes on the branches. From June to September it also runs all night on Fridays. Moyúa is the nearest station to Sauna Element; for Sauna Ego, walk to San Mamés or Indautxu. Check the Metro Bilbao app for changes.
    • Apps: Grindr is the main app in Bilbao. Meet in a bar first, and don't share your room number on the first chat.

    Local colour: pintxos first

No one in Bilbao goes out on an empty stomach. Before the sauna or the bars, do as the locals do and go for txikiteo: a short glass of wine, a txikito, and a pintxo or two from the counter, then on to the next bar with your kuadrilla. The arcaded Plaza Nueva (Plaza Berria) on the edge of the Casco Viejo is the classic place for it, two minutes from the gay bars of Barrenkale. Try txakoli, the slightly sparkling Basque white poured from a height, and look out for pintxo-pote evenings, when bars offer a drink and a pintxo at a set price.

    Pride: Bilbao Bizkaia HARRO 2026

Harro means "proud" in Basque. Bilbao Bizkaia HARRO, run by the association Ortzadar LGTBI+, filled the second half of June 2026, and the programme ended on 28 June. The main march set off at 17:00 on Saturday 27 June from the Sagrado Corazón, with three floats at the front, and that evening the singer Soraya played El Arenal at 21:00, followed by a DJ set. On 28 June the festival held its first day dedicated to Latino Pride, while a coordinating group of Bizkaia's LGBTIQ+ collectives held its own, more protest-focused 28J demonstration. The 2027 dates had not been announced in November 2026.

A few words of Spanish and Basque

    • Cuarto oscuro (Spanish): darkroom. Cabinas: cabins. Laberinto: maze.
    • Taquilla: locker. Entrada: entry fee. ¿Cuánto cuesta la entrada? How much is entry?
    • Playa nudista / naturista: naturist beach. In Basque, hondartza is beach.
    • Urgencias: A&E. Profilaxis postexposición (PPE): PEP.
    • Kaixo (Basque): hello. Agur: goodbye. Eskerrik asko: thank you.
    • Harro: proud. Bilbo: Bilbao in Basque. Kalea: street.

Frequently asked questions

Are there gay cruise bars with darkrooms in Bilbao?

Not really any more. The bear bar The Santu Bear, which had a darkroom, appears to have closed, and in 2026 the city's cruising happens mainly in its two gay saunas. High, a club in Bilbao La Vieja that hosts queer parties, has been listed with a darkroom area, so check its social media for dates.

Which gay saunas are there in Bilbao?

Sauna Element, at Costa Kalea 8–10 near Moyúa, is open every day and later on Saturday nights. Sauna Ego, in the Plaza Zabalburu shopping galleries at Nicolás Alcorta Kalea 3, is the larger of the two and is listed as open Thursday to Sunday afternoons and evenings. Call before you go, as hours change.

How do I get home at night in Bilbao?

Metro Bilbao runs until about 02:00 on Friday nights and all night from Saturday into Sunday and on the eves of public holidays. From June to September it also runs all night on Fridays. For Sauna Element, Moyúa station is a few minutes' walk away.

When was Bilbao Pride 2026?

Bilbao Bizkaia HARRO ran through the second half of June 2026 and ended on 28 June. The main march left the Sagrado Corazón on Saturday 27 June at 17:00, and Soraya played El Arenal that night. The 2027 dates had not been announced in November 2026.
