Bologna is a city you walk under cover: kilometres of porticoes, red-brick arcades that keep off the rain in November and the sun in July. Mornings smell of coffee and fresh pasta from the delis of the Quadrilatero, where mortadella is sliced paper-thin and sfogline roll out sheets of egg dough by hand; evenings belong to students spilling out of the bars on Via del Pratello. This is a university city with a long, proud queer history, and its sauna scene sits mostly around the central station. The honest summary: two saunas we could confirm in 2026, Steam on Via Ferrarese and Cosmos Club by the station, plus a third, Black Sauna out in the Roveri, whose status we could not confirm.
Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal in Italy since 1890 and same-sex civil unions since 2016, but there is no same-sex marriage, no joint adoption and no national hate-crime law covering sexual orientation. Gay saunas operate legally as private members' clubs, which is why you'll be asked for a membership card.
The card you'll need: ARCO
Italian gay saunas and cruise clubs are run as private associations, so entry is for members only. The main national network today is ARCO, set up in 2018 by the historic network of Italian gay clubs; older guides still talk about the ANDDOS card.
- You join in person at a club, with valid photo ID. Bring your passport or EU ID card.
- A standard card covers a year across ARCO's member clubs, and non-Italians can take a shorter Travel Card. Fees are set by each club, so ask at the desk.
- In Bologna, ARCO's 2026 club list includes Steam Sauna, the RED club and the Styx club. Cosmos is not on it: its website says the club is affiliated to ENDAS, a national leisure association, rather than ARCO or ANDDOS, so ask at the desk which card you need and whether a card from elsewhere is accepted.
- about 600 m² on two levels;
- a wet area with a jacuzzi, Turkish bath and Finnish sauna;
- a relaxation area with 24 cabins, a video room and a smoking area;
- a bar serving piadine and hot and cold sandwiches, and a buffet at 18:30 on public holidays.
- Getting there: both confirmed saunas are close to Bologna Centrale. Cosmos is a couple of minutes' walk away; Steam is just north of the station, a short walk or bus ride towards the trade-fair area. From the airport, the Marconi Express monorail runs to Centrale.
- Night transport: buses thin out late in the evening, so for the Roveri or a late finish, book a radio taxi (CO.TA.BO or CAT) and wait indoors.
- Cash and ID: bring photo ID for the membership card, and some cash in case the card machine is down.
- Timing: Sunday afternoons are the classic sauna time. August is quiet: students leave the city and many businesses cut their hours or close for a few weeks around Ferragosto (15 August). Neither sauna publishes summer hours online, so phone before an August visit.
- Apps: Grindr is the most used app.
- Health: BLQ Checkpoint (blqcheckpoint.it), a community centre run with the Plus association, offers free, anonymous HIV and STI testing by appointment. If a condom breaks, PEP should be started as soon as possible and within 72 hours: go to a hospital emergency department such as Sant'Orsola.
- Tessera – membership card. Ce l'ho / non ce l'ho – I have one / I don't have one.
- Socio – member. Documento – ID.
- Ingresso – entry. Quanto costa? – how much is it?
- Posso pagare con la carta? – can I pay by card?
- Asciugamano – towel. Ciabatte – flip-flops. Armadietto – locker.
- Bagno turco – steam room. Idromassaggio – jacuzzi.
- No, grazie – no, thanks. It works anywhere in a sauna.
- Portici – the porticoes. Sfoglia – fresh egg pasta.
- La Dotta, la Grassa, la Rossa – "the learned, the fat, the red": Bologna's three nicknames, for its university, its food and its red roofs (and politics).
Steam Sauna: the main one, north of the station
Steam Sauna, at Via Ferrarese 22/I in the Bolognina district, sits just north of Bologna Centrale and the trade-fair area. ARCO says it opened in 2000 and describes it as popular with both members and tourists. According to ARCO, you'll find:
misterb&b also mentions reading and TV rooms and a dark maze, and calls it busy on Sunday afternoons.
Hours: ARCO lists it as open every day from 14:00 to 24:00. Some listings give a later close on Friday and Saturday, so check the website (saunasteam.it) before a late visit.
Card and prices: ARCO membership is required. No current price list is published online; misterb&b gives only a very wide entry range, so ask at the desk and bring cash as a back-up.
Contact: ARCO gives +39 051 095 9318 and steamsauna22@hotmail.com. Other listings show an older number, so if one doesn't answer, try the other.
Cosmos Club: the daytime sauna by the station
Cosmos Club is hidden in an internal courtyard at Via Boldrini 16 (16/v), which Travel Gay puts two minutes' walk from Bologna Centrale, handy between trains. Listings describe two floors with a biosauna, Finnish sauna and Turkish bath, chromotherapy, a jacuzzi, a solarium, relaxation and video rooms, a darkroom and a bar with drinks and food.
Hours: the club's own website (cosmosclub.eu) gives every day, 11:30–22:30. Older listings that say it's open round the clock are out of date. Phone ahead (051 244089) around holidays and in August.
Card: membership is required for men over 18. Cosmos isn't an ARCO club: it says it is affiliated to ENDAS, so ask at reception which card it issues. No prices are published online.
What to expect: Cosmos is a long-running local sauna. Expect an older, relaxed afternoon crowd rather than a party, and an atmosphere that depends a lot on the day.
Status unconfirmed: Black Sauna, Via del Tipografo 2 (Roveri). Older guides list a men's sauna on the RED club's site, about 5 km east of the centre. It isn't on ARCO's 2026 club list and RED's website doesn't mention a sauna, so phone first (+39 051 601 1241) and take a taxi: the Roveri is an industrial area.
After the sauna: the Cassero and the clubs
You can't understand gay Bologna without the Cassero LGBTI+ Center, at Via Don Minzoni 18, next to the MAMbo modern art museum and the Giardino del Cavaticcio. The name comes from its first home: in 1982 the city council gave Bologna's gay movement the cassero (gatehouse) of Porta Saragozza, one of the old city gates, and Zero calls the group that moved in the first Italian gay circolo (members' association). In March 2002, after twenty years, the association left the gate and moved to the Salara, the city's old salt warehouse, now part of the Manifattura delle Arti beside the Cineteca and MAMbo. The centre has been at the heart of Italian LGBTQ+ activism throughout; the national Arcigay office is based in Bologna. Today it runs talks, groups and club nights: Bologna Welcome describes dancing inside a tower to house and techno. Entry needs an Arcigay or Arcilesbica card (not the ARCO card), which you can take out on the night or during the centre's daytime opening hours. Many Bologna venues slow down or close for part of August, so check the Cassero's programme before a summer visit.
For later, RED (Via del Tipografo 2, Roveri) is an ARCO club; ARCO lists it as open on Saturdays from 22:30 to 06:00, so check its programme at redbologna.it. Styx, at Viale Pietramellara 3B/C by the station, is also on ARCO's list.
Keep it indoors. Some directories list outdoor cruising in Bologna's parks. Sex in a public place is illegal in Italy and can bring heavy fines, or criminal charges near places used by minors. The saunas and clubs are the safe, legal options. The streets around the station are busy by day but empty late at night: keep your phone and wallet out of sight, and take a taxi to the Roveri, which is poorly served by public transport after dark.
A Bologna afternoon
Steam opens at 14:00 and Cosmos even earlier, so build the day around lunch. Eat tagliatelle al ragù (never "spaghetti bolognese" here) or tortellini in brodo at a trattoria, then wander the porticoes, which became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2021. Pick up a crescentina (fried dough) with mortadella and squacquerone cheese in the Quadrilatero, the old market streets off Piazza Maggiore. After the sauna, join the evening aperitivo: a spritz or a glass of local Pignoletto with snacks on Via del Pratello, where the student crowd is mixed and relaxed.
Practical tips
Bologna Pride
Bologna's Pride is the Rivolta Pride, a self-funded and openly political march. The 2026 edition took place on Saturday 13 June under the slogan "No Pride in Genocide, Free Palestine", with demands on trans rights, public healthcare, housing and marriage equality. Marchers gathered at Giardini Margherita at 16:00 and set off at 17:00, passing through Via Santo Stefano, the university quarter and Via Irnerio to Parco della Montagnola. Thousands took part, according to Zero. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
The autumn brings Gender Bender, Bologna's long-running queer arts festival, usually in late October and November; check its programme for this year's dates.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a gay sauna in Bologna?
Yes, two that we could confirm in 2025–2026. Steam Sauna, at Via Ferrarese 22/I just north of the central station, is a men-only sauna on two levels and an ARCO member club. Cosmos Club, in a courtyard at Via Boldrini 16, a couple of minutes' walk from Bologna Centrale, is the daytime option.
Do I need a membership card for Bologna's gay saunas?
Yes. Italian gay saunas are private members' clubs, so bring photo ID. Steam requires an ARCO card, which you can take out at the desk and use across ARCO's network in Italy. Cosmos says it is affiliated to ENDAS rather than ARCO, so check at the desk which card it uses.
What are the opening hours of the Bologna saunas?
Steam opens daily from 14:00 to midnight, according to ARCO. Cosmos gives its own hours as 11:30 to 22:30 every day. Prices aren't published online, so carry some cash.
Is Black Sauna in Bologna still open?
We couldn't confirm that it is. It isn't on ARCO's 2026 club list, and the RED club at the same Roveri address doesn't mention a sauna. Phone before making the trip.
When is Bologna Pride?
Usually in June. The 2026 Rivolta Pride marched on Saturday 13 June from Giardini Margherita to Parco della Montagnola. No 2027 date had been published by October 2026.
