Brighton smells of salt, vinegar and seaweed. Gulls wheel over the Palace Pier, the shingle rattles as the waves pull back, and the onion domes of the Royal Pavilion catch the last light a few streets inland. Walk east along St James's Street into Kemptown and the rainbow flags thicken; keep going along the seafront and the city's cruising history is all around you, from the naturist beach to the bushes of Duke's Mound. The indoor scene is compact and easy to read: two men's saunas, the Brighton Sauna on Grand Parade and The Boiler Room in Hove, plus a new men-only Brighton Cruise Bar next to the Kemptown sauna and a monthly cruising night. The old dedicated cruise bars have gone, so most of the action happens in the saunas and on the apps.
Legal in one line: same-sex marriage has been legal in England since 2014 and the Equality Act 2010 bans discrimination; the only legal line to know as a cruiser is about sex in public places, set out in the box below.
How the city is laid out
Brighton and Hove are one city, joined along the seafront. Kemptown, east of the Palace Pier around St James's Street, is the gay quarter, and that's where you'll find the Brighton Sauna and the cruise bar on Grand Parade, near the Royal Pavilion and about ten minutes' walk downhill from Brighton station. The Boiler Room is the other way, in Hove, a few minutes from Hove station, one stop west of Brighton on the train. Everything in Kemptown is walkable; for Hove, take the train, a bus or a taxi. For bars to start the night, see the Brighton bars guide.
The saunas
The two saunas get a short write-up here; the Brighton saunas guide has more detail.

The Brighton Sauna · 75–76 Grand Parade, BN2 9JA
A men's sauna in a terrace on Grand Parade, Kemptown, with a discreet rear entrance off Grand Parade Mews. Out x Out lists a dry sauna (for about 14), a steam room, a jacuzzi, a 15-seat cinema, 16 private cabins, a large downstairs dark room, a sling room, a lounge, a dining area, a massage room and a smoking area. Towels, a locker, chilled water and Wi-Fi come with entry, and free condoms and lube are supplied with the Terrence Higgins Trust. It has held a licence to sell alcohol since 2012, when the council granted it with conditions including CCTV and a ban on taking drinks into the hot rooms.
Hours (as listed in 2026): Monday to Thursday noon to 21:00 (last entry 20:30); from noon on Friday it stays open non-stop through Saturday, closing at 21:00 on Sunday. That makes it the place to go after the bars at the weekend. Prices weren't published in the listings we checked, so look at the venue's own site before you go.
The Boiler Room · 84–86 Denmark Villas, Hove, BN3 3TJ
The Hove sauna has had several names (The Denmark, D2, then TBS2) and became The Boiler Room in 2015. It is men-only and over-18, and asks under-25s for ID. Inside: a 12-person sauna, a steam room, a large jacuzzi, five private cabins, a two-tier cinema, a lounge bar with food, and a smoking yard. Towel, locker, tea, coffee and chilled water are included.
Hours (as listed in 2026): daily noon to 23:00, except Friday, noon to 02:00; the heat rooms switch off 15 minutes before closing. Friday nights from 21:00 are themed: naked nights on the first and third Fridays, bears nights on the second and fourth, and a no-theme party on a fifth Friday. Entry gets cheaper later in the day, and under-25s pay a reduced rate outside party nights.

Cruise bar and cruising nights
Brighton Cruise Bar · Grand Parade, Kemptown
The newest venue on the scene. In October 2025, Brighton & Hove News reported that the former Pussycat lapdancing club next door to the Brighton Sauna had stopped trading, and that its licence was passing to Brighton Cruise Bar Ltd, run by Paul and Andrew Gray, who also run the sauna. They planned to reopen the building as a gay bar from December 2025. It now runs as a men-only private members' cruise bar: membership is free, but you sign up online before you go. Out x Out lists it as open Friday and Saturday 19:00–04:00 and Sunday from 15:00, closed Monday to Thursday. Check its Instagram (@brightoncruisebar) for themed nights and dress codes.
DILF Brighton · Charles Street Tap, 8 Marine Parade
A gay cruising event held upstairs at the Charles Street Tap, the big LGBTQ+ bar on the seafront just east of the Palace Pier. Travel Gay listed it in July 2025 as usually running on the first Saturday of the month. One-off nights come and go, so check the date before you plan around it.
Closed, but still in old guides: Subline, for years the city's dedicated cruise bar, has closed. Don't Tell Mama, the men-only bar at 75 St George's Road in Kemptown, closed in 2022. The Bright N Beautiful sauna and Unit 1 in Rottingdean are long gone. And the Pussycat Club on Grand Parade is now Brighton Cruise Bar.
Duke's Mound
Duke's Mound is the steep, bushy slope that runs up from Madeira Drive to Marine Parade at the eastern end of Kemptown, right behind the city's naturist beach. Travel Gay describes it as a long-accepted cruising ground screened by bushes some 15–20 feet tall, busy by day and by night, with paths that get very dark inside. It sits next to a public road, the seafront and the beach, which are used by everyone.
The law and your safety at Duke's Mound and anywhere outdoors:
- Being there isn't a crime; the sex can be. Sex where members of the public could see it can be charged under the common-law offence of outraging public decency. Exposure with intent to cause alarm or distress is an offence under section 66 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, and behaviour that causes harassment, alarm or distress can be dealt with under the Public Order Act 1986.
- Never in public toilets. Sexual activity in a public lavatory is a specific offence under section 71 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, punishable by up to six months in prison. Cottaging is the one form of cruising the law targets directly.
- Read the place. Keep well out of sight of paths, the road and the beach, and leave if walkers, families or police are around. Sussex Police respond to complaints.
- Robbery risk is real after dark. Take your phone and a little cash and nothing else, tell a friend where you are, and leave if a group turns up that isn't there for the same reason you are. To report a crime, call 101; in an emergency, 999.
- Entry and ID: bring photo ID. Join Brighton Cruise Bar online before your first visit, because the club runs on membership. Saunas include towels and lockers; leave big bags at the hotel and keep your phone in the locker.
- Consent: "no" is always enough, a hand moved away means no, and dark rooms don't change that.
- Chems and G: never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol, never dose someone else, and call 999 if anyone stops responding.
- Health: NHS sexual health clinics in England are free for everyone, visitors included. Brighton's main clinic is the Claude Nicol Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Eastern Road, Kemptown, for testing, PrEP and PEP. PEP must start within 72 hours: out of hours, go to A&E at the same hospital and say "PEP". Check the clinic's opening and walk-in times before you go.
- Apps: Grindr is the main grid; Sniffies is widely used for cruising across the UK.
- Getting home: Kemptown is walkable from most central hotels. Trains to London (Victoria, London Bridge) take about an hour, but the last ones leave around midnight, well before the Brighton Sauna's weekend crowd thins out. Brighton & Hove Buses runs a handful of night routes; check its app before relying on one, or use licensed taxis.
- Kemptown – the gay quarter (the historic estate is spelled Kemp Town).
- Twitten – a Sussex word for a narrow alley between houses.
- London-by-the-Sea – the city's old nickname.
- Cottaging – old British slang for toilet cruising. Know the word; don't do it.
- Bona – good, from Polari, the old gay slang of Britain's seaside and theatre world.
- Vada – look (Polari): "vada the bona omi" means "look at the nice man".
Local colour
A Brighton night tends to start with chips on the shingle and a pint on the seafront, then moves up into Kemptown. On a summer afternoon the naturist beach below Duke's Mound fills with sunbathers. Grand Parade sits right by the Royal Pavilion, George IV's seaside palace, so the sauna and the cruise bar have a royal neighbour. Brighton has a long reputation as one of Britain's most relaxed cities for gay men, and that easy-going mood carries into the saunas too.
Practical tips
Pride
Brighton & Hove Pride is held over the first weekend of August, with a parade through the city, a ticketed festival in Preston Park and the Pride Village Party around St James's Street in Kemptown. The 2026 edition took place in early August. It's the busiest weekend of the year for the saunas and the cruise bar, and hotel prices rise accordingly; check brighton-pride.org for the 2027 dates.

Yes, two. The Brighton Sauna is at 75–76 Grand Parade in Kemptown, about ten minutes' walk from Brighton station, and is listed as open around the clock from Friday to Sunday evening. The Boiler Room is at 84–86 Denmark Villas in Hove, a few minutes from Hove station, with themed Friday parties until 2 a.m.
Is there a gay cruise bar in Brighton?
Yes. Brighton Cruise Bar on Grand Parade, run by the team behind the Brighton Sauna next door, is a men-only private members' bar. It is listed as open Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. and on Sunday from 3 p.m.; membership is free, and you sign up online before you go.
Is outdoor cruising legal in Brighton?
Being in a cruising area is not a crime, but sex where others could see it can be charged as outraging public decency, and sexual activity in a public toilet is an offence under section 71 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. Duke's Mound, the bushy slope above the naturist beach in Kemptown, is busy and dark, so keep valuables to a minimum and leave if families are around.
Where can I get PEP or PrEP in Brighton?
NHS sexual health services in England are free for everyone, visitors included. In Brighton the main clinic is the Claude Nicol Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital on Eastern Road in Kemptown; out of hours, go to the hospital's A&E. PEP must start within 72 hours of a risk, so go as soon as you can and say 'PEP'.
Do I need ID or membership for Brighton's saunas and cruise bar?
Bring photo ID. The Boiler Room is men-only and over-18, and asks under-25s for ID. Brighton Cruise Bar is a private members' club, so register online for its free membership before your first visit. Towels and lockers are included at both saunas.
