Evansville sits at the southwestern tip of Indiana on the Ohio River, bordering Kentucky. It's a regional hub for a tri-state area and has a small but active LGBTQ+ scene — more than you'd expect for a city of its size in southern Indiana.

Gay Bars & Venues

    • The Someplace Else — Evansville's longest-running gay bar; drag shows, pool tables, and a loyal local following. The anchor of the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife.
    • Bar Twenty-Two — gay bar with regular events and a welcoming atmosphere; alternative option to Someplace Else.
    • Krave Nightclub — LGBTQ+-friendly dance venue; themed nights and drag entertainment.

Community

Evansville Pride is in June — a community event that draws from the surrounding tri-state region. PFLAG Evansville operates locally. The University of Southern Indiana and University of Evansville both have LGBTQ+ student organisations.

Regional Context

Indianapolis is 2.5 hours north and has a significantly more developed gay scene. Louisville, KY is 2 hours east — also with more options. Evansville functions as the local hub for surrounding smaller communities in Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois. The Ohio River waterfront has been revitalised in recent years with restaurants and the Ford Center arena.

⚠ Indiana context: Indiana passed controversial RFRA legislation in 2015 (later amended) and remains politically conservative at the state level. Evansville is somewhat more mixed; the gay venues operate openly and the community is established. Exercise normal discretion outside LGBTQ+-specific spaces.
