Freiburg runs on water and sunshine. Narrow channels called Bächle gurgle along the cobbled streets of the old town, the red sandstone Münster rises over the market square, and the Black Forest starts at the edge of town. It's a green, student-heavy city of around 230,000 people in the far south-west corner of Germany, with France and Switzerland close enough for a day trip. The cruising scene is small and indoor: two gay saunas with cabins and dark areas, and very little else. Many local men use the apps, and for a cruise club or a bigger night out they take the train to Basel or Strasbourg.

Legal in one line: Germany has had same-sex marriage since 2017 and strong anti-discrimination law, and since November 2024 the Self-Determination Act (Selbstbestimmungsgesetz) lets adults change their legal gender by declaration; gay saunas and darkrooms are legal, licensed businesses. Sex in public is a different matter: under §183a StGB (Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses, "causing a public nuisance") sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can bring a fine or up to a year in prison.

How cruising works in Freiburg

The saunas are the scene. Both have cabins and darker play areas as well as the heat, so you don't need a separate cruise bar to meet men indoors. We couldn't confirm any dedicated cruise bar, darkroom club, gay cinema or sex shop with video cabins operating in Freiburg in 2026, and the main gay directories list none. For the full sauna details, see our Freiburg saunas page. Opening times are afternoon and evening, not all night, so plan around them.

The saunas

Thermos Club · Lehener Straße 21, Stühlinger

Thermos Club (Lehener Straße 21, 79106 Freiburg) is in the Stühlinger district, west of the Hauptbahnhof. Spartacus describes it as a sauna used exclusively or almost exclusively by gay men, on two floors of about 300 m² (Travel Gay gives 250 m²). Between them, the two guides list:

    • Heat: a Finnish dry sauna and a steam bath, with showers and a relax room.
    • Cruising: a darkroom, a sling room and private cabins on the first floor, included in the entry price, plus a large video room.
    • Bar: a full bar with food (Spartacus mentions an extensive menu), a lounge and a smoking area. Free condoms are available.

Hours: Spartacus and Travel Gay both list Tuesday to Friday 16:00–23:00 and Saturday and Sunday 14:00–23:00, closed on Mondays. Prices on Spartacus: €14 standard, €11 for students, and a six-visit card at €65 (€55 for students). Travel Gay last updated its listing in July 2024, so phone +49 761 275239 or check thermos-club-sauna.de before a special trip.

    RundO SaunaClub · Ziegelhofstraße 230

RundO SaunaClub (Ziegelhofstraße 230, 79110 Freiburg) is in the north-west of the city, and Travel Gay notes that it used to trade as RG1. It lists a sauna, a shower area, a gym and a bar, with discounts for students and men aged 18 to 25. The gay travel blog Planet-Randy describes RundO as having a more classic feel than the modern, clean-lined Thermos Club, and lists both with cabins and cruising areas. RundO won four stars in Travel Gay's audience awards in 2023 and 2024. We couldn't find published opening hours or prices, so phone +49 761 88 66 59 22 before you go.

Renamed: the sauna at Ziegelhofstraße 230 formerly known as RG1 now trades as RundO SaunaClub. Older guides that list RG1 mean the same place.

    Outdoors: Opfinger See and Colombipark

Two outdoor places have a reputation among gay men in Freiburg. We couldn't confirm how active either is in 2026, and both are public places used by everyone.

    • Opfinger See: a lake on the western edge of the city near Opfingen, with a naturist (FKK) area. It's a summer place, busiest on warm days, and families and naturists of every kind use it too. Nudity on a designated FKK area is legal; sex in sight of others is not.
    • Colombipark: a small park in the city centre next to the Colombischlössle, the villa that houses the Archaeological Museum, by the Rotteckring. It's overlooked, close to busy streets and used by passers-by at all hours.

The law and your safety. We don't give directions. The law in Germany is clear:

    • §183a StGB (Criminal Code): sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can be punished with a fine or up to one year in prison.
    • §183 StGB separately covers indecent exposure (exhibitionistische Handlungen) by men.
    • §118 OWiG (Administrative Offences Act, Belästigung der Allgemeinheit): grossly improper behaviour that annoys or endangers the public can be fined even when it isn't a crime.

After dark, quiet spots are also where robberies happen. If you go anyway: daylight or dusk only, phone and cash kept to a minimum, nothing you can't afford to lose, and leave if a situation feels wrong. In an emergency, call 110 (police) or 112.

    Basel and Strasbourg, next door

Freiburg sits in the corner where Germany, France and Switzerland meet, and for a cruise club the neighbours have more to offer.

    • Basel (Switzerland) is less than an hour south by train. Remember that Swiss rules and Swiss francs apply once you cross the border, and carry your passport or ID card.
    • Strasbourg (France) is usually about an hour and a half by train, with a change in Offenburg. It has a cruise club, Antr'acte, and three saunas; see our Strasbourg cruising guide. Several of its venues close at 21:00 and have mixed days, so check before you travel. In France, sexual exhibition in a place visible to the public is an offence under Article 222-32 of the Code pénal.
    • Stuttgart and the Rhein-Neckar area are further north; see our Stuttgart cruising guide and Mannheim cruising guide.

    Practical tips

    • Entry and cash: both saunas charge entry, with cheaper rates for students and young men. Bring photo ID for youth rates and some cash (Bargeld) in case card payment isn't possible.
    • Timing: Thermos Club is closed on Mondays and closes at 23:00 on other days, so this is an afternoon and evening scene.
    • Lockers and phones: leave clothes, phone and wallet in your locker (Spind) before the dark areas. No photos, ever.
    • Consent: a hand moved away, or a "nein", means no. You can always leave.
    • Chems: never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol, never dose for someone else, and call 112 in an emergency.
    • Testing: the AIDS-Hilfe Freiburg offers HIV and STI advice and testing; check its website for current testing times.
    • PEP: after a risk, start post-exposure prophylaxis as soon as possible, ideally within hours and no later than 72 hours. In Germany PEP is given by hospital emergency departments and HIV specialist practices. In Freiburg, go to the emergency department (Notaufnahme) of the Universitätsklinikum Freiburg and say you need HIV-PEP. PrEP is prescribed in Germany through HIV specialist practices; if you use it, bring your own supply.
    • Getting home: Freiburg's trams and buses are run by the VAG. Night services are thinner than in bigger cities, so check the last tram and any night bus in the VAG or DB Navigator app before you go out, especially if you're heading back from the north-west.
    • Apps: Romeo and Grindr are both widely used in Germany, and across the border too.

A Freiburg evening, the local way

Start on the Münsterplatz, where the morning market sells the Lange Rote, a long red sausage in a roll with fried onions. Baden is wine country, so order a glass of local Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) or a crisp Gutedel from the Markgräflerland south of the city, or a cold Black Forest beer. Have a slice of Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, the cherry and cream Black Forest gateau, and a Flammkuchen, the thin, crisp tart with cream, onions and bacon you'll also find in Alsace. Watch your step on the way back: locals say that if you step into a Bächle, you'll marry someone from Freiburg.

    Pride: CSD Freiburg

Freiburg holds its own CSD (Christopher Street Day) each summer, with a march through the old town and a street festival. We couldn't confirm the date, route or motto of the 2026 edition from a reliable source before publication. For 2027, check the organisers' channels and the Freiburg city page nearer the time. Nearby, Strasbourg's Marche des Visibilités took place on 20 June 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Freiburg?

Mostly in the two gay saunas: Thermos Club on Lehener Straße in Stühlinger, west of the main station, and RundO SaunaClub on Ziegelhofstraße in the north-west of the city. We couldn't confirm a separate cruise bar, darkroom club or gay cinema operating in 2026, so for those many men go to Basel, Strasbourg or Stuttgart.

What are Thermos Club's opening hours and prices?

Spartacus lists Tuesday to Friday 16:00–23:00 and Saturday and Sunday 14:00–23:00, closed on Mondays. It gives entry at €14, or €11 for students, with a six-visit card at €65. Listings can lag behind changes, so phone +49 761 275239 before a special trip.

What is RundO SaunaClub in Freiburg?

It's the gay sauna at Ziegelhofstraße 230 that used to trade as RG1. Travel Gay lists a sauna, showers, a gym and a bar, with discounts for students and men aged 18 to 25. We couldn't find published opening hours, so phone +49 761 88 66 59 22 before you go.

Is outdoor cruising legal in Freiburg?

Not without risk. Under §183a of the German Criminal Code, sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can bring a fine or up to a year in prison, and lesser cases can be fined as a nuisance under §118 of the Administrative Offences Act. Parks and lakesides are public places used by families, so the saunas are the safer choice.

Are Basel and Strasbourg close to Freiburg?

Yes. Basel, across the Swiss border, is less than an hour south by train, and Strasbourg is usually reached in about an hour and a half with a change in Offenburg. Strasbourg has a cruise club and three saunas; remember that Swiss and French law apply once you cross the border.
