Nantes smells of the river at night. The Loire slides past the old shipping quays, the yellow trams hum along the Quai de la Fosse, and across the water the giant mechanical elephant of the Machines de l'île sleeps in its hangar. The city's cruising scene is small, friendly and mostly indoors: two men-only cruise bars, one with a long run of naturist and hood nights, a sex shop with a club at the back, and a large gay sauna in the centre, with a second sauna on the eastern edge of town. Some names have changed in recent years, and nearly everyone also uses Grindr. Here is what was running in autumn 2026.

Legal in one line: France decriminalised sex between men in 1791 and opened marriage and adoption to same-sex couples in 2013. Cruise bars, sex clubs and saunas are legal private venues for adults (18+). Sex in public is a different matter: see the box on the law and safety below.

How cruising works in Nantes

The French call it la drague, and a cruise bar is a bar cruising or a bar à backroom. In Nantes the venues are a short walk or tram ride apart: L'Autre Quai by the river west of the centre, Boy's Bar by the cathedral, System X near the Jardin des Plantes, and Le Steamer near the Cité des Congrès. The cruise bars come alive late, from about 22:00 at weekends, and run until 04:00; the sauna is open from midday. Themed nights matter here: naturist and cagoule (hood) sessions have their own dress codes, and outside them there's usually none. Bring cash and some ID, and keep valuables to a minimum.

Cruise bars and sex clubs

L'Autre Quai · 68 quai de la Fosse

A men-only cruise bar on the river side of the old port, a minute's walk from the Chantiers Navals stop on tram line 1. AgendaLGBT describes two levels and about 220 m² with a backroom, darkroom, cabins, slings, a glory hole and video screens. Travel Gay calls it an "old school fetish joint" and mentions Mr Leather competitions and themed events. It was still trading in October 2026, when it ran a Fet!ch Week weekend from 9 to 11 October.

Hours (as listed in 2026): closed Monday and Tuesday; Wednesday and Thursday 19:00–04:00; Friday and Saturday 22:00–04:00; Sunday 14:00–04:00. The bar's own Bluesky profile gives the same hours.

Prices and themes (AgendaLGBT, taken from the bar's agenda in October 2026):

    • Wednesday: naturist and hood night from 19:00 to 23:00, €15 with unlimited soft drinks; the dress code (fetish, naked or hooded) is compulsory and hoods can be borrowed. After 23:00, €12 with one drink and the cloakroom.
    • Thursday: free entry from 19:00 to 22:00, then €12 with one drink; cloakroom €2. The theme varies through the month (shirtless, neon and so on).
    • Sunday: a themed afternoon from 14:00 to 19:00 (naturist, hood or anything goes, depending on the week) at €17 with unlimited soft drinks, then free entry from 19:00 to 22:00 and €12 after that.
    • Happy hour on Thursdays and Sundays from 19:00 to 22:00. Special weekends sell tickets in advance; ordinary nights are pay at the door.

Boy's Bar · rue Ogée, by the cathedral

A small men-only bar with a backroom on rue Ogée, close to the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre. AgendaQ gives the address as 3 rue Ogée (AgendaLGBT says no. 4) and lists Tuesday to Thursday 20:00–02:00 and Friday and Saturday 22:00–04:00. Its November 2026 calendar shows naturist cruising on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and no-dress-code cruising from Thursday to Saturday. AgendaLGBT quotes the bar's social media at €10 with a drink and €12 for special parties. Reviewers in January 2025 described it as not very big but clean and welcoming, under new owners. Check Instagram (@boysbarnantes) for the week's themes.

    System X · 37 rue de Richebourg

A sex shop with a men's sex club behind it: misterb&b lists cabins, a sling and a backroom. Directory listings in 2026 show daytime hours of about 12:00–19:00, but we found little recent detail on how busy the club side is or what it costs, and its online reviews are mixed. Treat it as a daytime option and check on the spot.

For a drink before or after, Le Plein Sud in the Bouffay quarter is a long-running gay bar, and the full list is in our Nantes bars guide.

    The saunas

Both saunas include cruising areas, so they're part of the picture. More detail is on our Nantes saunas page.

Le Steamer · 4 bis rue Baron

The city-centre gay sauna, near the Cité des Congrès. misterb&b and FindMySauna describe about 650 m² with a pool, jacuzzi, hammam, dry sauna, bar and private cabins. Hours (Strobo listing): Monday to Thursday 12:00–01:00, Friday 12:00–02:00, Saturday 14:00–02:00, Sunday 14:00–01:00. Prices: €18 standard, €10 for under-25s and €12 for under-29s, with a reduced rate for the last three hours before closing; bring ID for the age rates. Its November 2026 calendar lists naturist sessions on Wednesdays and from 20:00 on some Mondays and Saturdays, a "black out" Saturday and occasional bear days. Lockers come with padlocks.

    B4 Sauna Club · 13 rue Gustave Eiffel, Sainte-Luce-sur-Loire

A sauna club of about 600 m² on the eastern edge of the metropolitan area, around fifteen minutes from the centre, with a jacuzzi-centred spa area, according to misterb&b. It's described as both gay and libertine, which means some sessions are mixed: the club publishes a separate programme for its gay sessions, so check which day you're going before you travel. A directory listing showed 14:00–01:00 opening in November 2026, and it has parking. Easiest by car or taxi.

    Closed or changed:

    • Block Men (3 rue Ogée), the old fetish cruise bar, is marked closed by misterb&b; Boy's Bar now trades on the same street.

    Outdoors

The eastern tip of the Île de Nantes, the Pointe de l'île Beaulieu, is known as an outdoor meeting place for men on the Loire banks. It's an ordinary public space used by walkers, cyclists, anglers and families: sex there is an offence under Article 222-32, and the quiet riverbank paths draw thieves once the walkers have gone. The box below applies in full.

    The law and your safety:

    • The law: under Article 222-32 of the French Penal Code (exhibition sexuelle), sexual exhibition imposed on others in a place visible to the public is punishable by up to one year in prison and a €15,000 fine. Riverbanks, parks, car parks and public toilets all count. Being gay in a public place is, of course, legal.
    • Robbery: quiet riverbanks at night attract thieves who target men they assume won't go to the police. Take only your phone, one card and a little cash, and don't follow strangers into dark corners.
    • The river: the Loire banks are unlit in places, with steep edges and strong currents. Stay away from the water's edge after dark, especially after drinking.
    • Daylight: if you go, go in daylight and tell someone where you are. The indoor venues are the safer choice.
    • Police: if police approach you, stay calm, be polite and show ID. Homophobic insults or attacks can be reported at any police station and are aggravated offences in French law.
    • Emergency: call 112 (police 17, ambulance 15).

    A Nantes evening

Start on the Île de Nantes at the Machines de l'île, where the 12-metre Grand Éléphant takes passengers for a slow, trumpeting walk past the old shipyard hangars. In summer, the city's art trail, Le Voyage à Nantes, is marked by a green line painted on the pavement that links installations across the centre; follow it into the Bouffay quarter for an apéro. Order a glass of muscadet, the dry white from the vineyards just south-east of the city, ideally with oysters or a plate of fish in beurre blanc, the butter sauce Nantes claims as its own. Nibble a Petit Beurre from LU, the biscuit maker whose old factory is now the Lieu Unique arts centre, or a striped berlingot sweet, and walk off dinner through the 19th-century Passage Pommeraye. Then take the tram down the Quai de la Fosse, or up to the cathedral, and the night begins.

    Practical tips

    • Trams and night service: the Naolib network (formerly TAN) runs three tram lines and the Busway. According to AgendaLGBT, the last trams leave around 00:30 from Sunday to Thursday and around 02:30 on Friday and Saturday nights, the same pattern as Naolib's night buses, and on Saturday nights a night line it lists as NO serves the Chantiers Navals stop by L'Autre Quai until nearly 05:00. Le Bonbon reported in 2024 that the Luciole night buses also leave from the Hangar à Bananes, across the river on the Île de Nantes, on Saturday nights until about 04:45. The cruise bars close at 04:00, so check the night timetable on naolib.fr before you go out, or plan on a taxi or ride-hailing app home.
    • Cash and ID: bring euros for the door and the cloakroom, and ID for age-based sauna prices.
    • Dress codes: only during themed sessions (naturist, hood, fetish); L'Autre Quai lends hoods on Wednesdays. Otherwise come as you are.
    • Lockers and phones: use the cloakroom or locker, leave your passport and spare cards at the hotel, and never take photos inside.
    • Consent: non is enough, in any room, at any time. Staff should act if someone ignores it.
    • PrEP and testing: the CeGIDD at the CHU de Nantes (Bâtiment Le Tourville, 3rd floor, 5 rue du Professeur Yves Boquien) offers free, optionally anonymous testing for HIV, hepatitis and STIs, plus a PrEP consultation, by appointment from Monday to Friday (02 40 08 31 19 or Doctolib).
    • PEP: after a condom breaks or other risk, start post-exposure treatment (TPE) as soon as possible, and within 48 hours at the latest. The CeGIDD handles exposure emergencies during opening hours; at night, at weekends and on public holidays, go to the urgences (emergency department) of the CHU de Nantes.
    • Chems: never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol and never dose for someone else. In an emergency call 15 or 112.
    • Apps: Grindr is the main app; meet in a bar first, and share your location with a friend.

    Pride: the Marche des Fiertés

Nantes Pride is held in June and organised by NOSIG, the city's LGBTI+ centre. The 2026 Marche des Fiertés took place on Saturday 13 June 2026 under the slogan "Résister c'est exister, exister c'est résister". An associative village opened on the Cours Saint-Pierre at 11:00, and the march wound through the city centre from 14:00 to 17:30, with about 20,000 people expected, according to Big City Nantes. The official after-party ran that night at the Warehouse on the Quai des Antilles, with a free warm-up at the TDL by the Loire, and the cruise bars and sauna were busy all weekend. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing; see our Nantes Pride page.

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Nantes?

Mostly indoors. L'Autre Quai on the Quai de la Fosse and Boy's Bar on rue Ogée, by the cathedral, are men-only cruise bars with darkrooms and themed nights. Le Steamer on rue Baron is the city-centre gay sauna, and System X on rue de Richebourg combines a sex shop with a small sex club.

What are L'Autre Quai's hours and prices?

As listed in October 2026, it opens Wednesday and Thursday from 19:00, Friday and Saturday from 22:00 and Sunday from 14:00, closing at 04:00, and it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Entry is free on Thursdays from 19:00 to 22:00 and otherwise €12 to €17 depending on the session. Check its agenda before you go.

Is there a gay sauna in Nantes?

Yes. Le Steamer at 4 bis rue Baron is a gay sauna of about 650 m² with a pool, jacuzzi, hammam and dry sauna, open daily from midday or 14:00 until 01:00 or 02:00. Standard entry is listed at €18, with cheaper rates for under-25s and under-29s. B4 Sauna Club in Sainte-Luce-sur-Loire is a second, partly libertine option.

Is outdoor cruising legal in Nantes?

No. Sex anywhere the public can see it is a criminal offence in France (Article 222-32 of the Penal Code), with a maximum of one year in prison and a €15,000 fine. The dark Loire banks also bring a real risk of robbery and falls, so the bars and saunas are the safer bet.

When is Nantes Pride?

The Marche des Fiertés is held in June. In 2026 it took place on Saturday 13 June, organised by the LGBTI+ centre NOSIG, with a village on Cours Saint-Pierre from 11:00 and a march through the centre from 14:00. Expect the 2027 march in June too; NOSIG had not yet set the date.
