Gay Sauna in Nice: The Honest 2026 Guide
Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change
Morning in Nice smells of flowers and wood smoke: the stalls of the Cours Saleya market filling up with blooms and lemons, and a vendor in Vieux-Nice tipping a crisp, peppery socca, the chickpea pancake, out of a wood-fired pan. By afternoon the light over the Baie des Anges turns silver, the pebbles clatter under the waves along the Promenade des Anglais, and the ochre and red façades of the old town glow below Castle Hill. The gay sauna scene is small and afternoon-led: one established men's sauna, Les Bains-Douches, near Place Garibaldi; one mixed, gay-friendly sauna, Sauna du Château, on the edge of Vieux-Nice; and a third listing we could not verify.
Legal in one line: France decriminalised sex between men in 1791 and opened marriage and adoption to same-sex couples in 2013. Gay saunas are legal private venues for adults, and Nice is generally relaxed about same-sex couples.
Les Bains-Douches: the city's established gay sauna
Les Bains-Douches, at 7 Rue Gubernatis, is the address most gay guides send you to in Nice, and the only dedicated men's sauna we could confirm in the city. Rue Gubernatis runs between Boulevard Dubouchage and Avenue Félix-Faure, on the north side of the Promenade du Paillon park, between Place Masséna and Place Garibaldi. misterb&b dates the sauna to 1997. Travel Gay describes it over three floors, while a misterb&b reviewer counts four. Either way, you get:
- a dry sauna, a steam room (hammam) and a large jacuzzi;
- a video room, a darkroom and private cabins;
- a bar and a relaxation lounge;
- naked parties and themed nights, according to Travel Gay. GayOut lists a recurring Sunday afternoon session.
- Facilities: reviewers mention a jacuzzi, a steam room and recently renovated, clean areas, with friendly staff. On the minus side, people mention a chilly corridor, a smell near the jacuzzi and straight porn on the screens.
- Crowd: mixed, and many reviewers say it skews older. One reviewer says couples pay a reduced entry fee. Another found the price high for a provincial city.
- Hours: listed as 13:00–20:00 daily, but several visitors say it closes around 18:30–19:00, and a 2024 reviewer said hours vary "selon fréquentation" (depending on how busy it is). Phone +33 4 93 85 73 91 before you go.
- Status: reviews were still being posted in 2025 and 2026, including in September 2026.
- Tram: Nice has three tram lines run by Lignes d'Azur. Line 2 links the airport with the centre (Jean Médecin, Garibaldi) and the port (Port Lympia); the airport says trams run every 7 to 8 minutes on weekdays and reach the centre in less than 30 minutes. Line 1 crosses Place Masséna and Place Garibaldi. For Les Bains-Douches, Garibaldi is a handy stop. Sauna du Château is an easy walk through Vieux-Nice from Place Masséna. A single ticket was €1.50 including one transfer within 74 minutes, with an increase to €1.70 announced, so check the current fare.
- Cash: bring euros in small notes; Les Bains-Douches is reported to be cash only.
- Taxis and apps: the centre is walkable, and Uber and local taxis work in Nice. Grindr is the main gay app.
- Before or after: the city's gay bars are close by. GayOut places Le Six a couple of minutes' walk from Sauna du Château. Check the Nice guide for the current bar list.
- Bonjour – hello (always say it when you walk in).
- Merci – thank you.
- Santé ! – cheers!
- C'est combien ? – how much is it?
- Une serviette – a towel. Un casier – a locker. Le vestiaire – the changing room.
- Le hammam – the steam room.
- Espèces – cash. Carte – card.
- Socca – Nice's chickpea-flour pancake, eaten hot with black pepper.
- Pissaladière – onion tart with anchovies and black olives.
- L'apéro – the early-evening drink, often rosé or pastis.
Hours: daily from 13:00. Listings disagree on closing time: misterb&b gives 21:00 and Travel Gay 22:00. Call +33 4 93 80 28 26 to check. French directory listings also say hours and prices are given by phone.
Prices: no official price list is published. A 2017 visitor paid €13, so expect a higher price now and ask when you call. It's reported to be cash only.
When to go: visitors have long said Sunday afternoon is the busiest time. A September 2026 misterb&b review says it draws a younger crowd, and older reviews describe a varied one. Know before you go: reviews are mixed. Over the years people have praised the jacuzzi, the darkroom and the friendly atmosphere, while others have complained about smells, a lukewarm jacuzzi and brusque staff at the door. Most detailed reviews are several years old, so take them as history rather than a current verdict.
Sauna du Château: mixed and gay-friendly, by Vieux-Nice
Sauna du Château, at 17 Rue des Ponchettes, sits on the seafront edge of Vieux-Nice, below Castle Hill. It is not a gay sauna in the strict sense. It's a mixed sauna where men, women and couples share the space, including a mixed shower, and GayOut describes it as "gay friendly but mixed". Go with the right expectations and it can be a relaxed Riviera afternoon.
A listing we couldn't verify: Sauna Le Apollo
GayOut also lists Sauna Le Apollo at 22 Rue de la Buffa, west of the centre, describing a men-only sauna on two floors with a steam room, dry sauna, jacuzzi, cabins and a darkroom. We could not find this sauna in any other gay guide, directory or French-language source, and the listing gives no phone number or website. It also describes the venue as men-only while advertising a couples night. Until it can be confirmed, we've left it out of the table. If you're staying near Rue de la Buffa, check it in person or on a map app with recent reviews before planning around it.
Closed or changed: Le Cercle, at 16 Avenue Clément Ader, is marked closed by both Travel Gay and misterb&b, with misterb&b noting that it is now a mixed bathhouse. Older guides that list it as a gay sauna are out of date.
A Nice afternoon
Saunas here are an afternoon thing, so build the day around them. Start at the Cours Saleya market, then eat in the lanes of Vieux-Nice: a paper cone of socca, a slice of pissaladière (onion tart with anchovies and olives), or petits farcis, stuffed vegetables. Walk it off up the steps of Castle Hill for the view over the bay and the port, or along the Promenade des Anglais. Before or after the sauna comes the apéro: a glass of chilled Provençal rosé or a pastis on a terrace in Vieux-Nice or around the port is the local way to slide into the evening.
For the beach, Coco Beach, the rocky shore east of the port, is listed by France's official tourism site among the country's gay-friendly beaches. It's flat rock platforms with ladders into the sea, good for a swim and sunbathing. Naturism isn't permitted there.
Stick to indoor venues. French law punishes sexual exhibition in public places with up to a year in prison and a €15,000 fine. Parks, piers, beaches and hillsides all count as public places. We don't list outdoor cruising spots. Use the saunas instead.
