Last verified: November 2026. Ottawa has three gay bars, and they aren't on one street. The Lookout is upstairs in the ByWard Market, Swizzles is downtown on Queen Street, and T's Pub is in the Bank Street Village in Centretown. Much of the rest of the city's queer nightlife happens one night at a time in mainstream rooms: a drag series on Elgin Street, dance parties at Arts Court, a lesbian party at a food hall. Here's what's open, what happens when, and what has closed.
Legal in one line: same-sex relationships have been legal in Canada since 1969 and marriage since 2005, and sexual orientation and gender identity are protected in Ontario. The drinking age is 19 in Ontario and 18 across the river in Gatineau.
The three gay bars
Lookout Bar, 41 York Street, ByWard Market
The Lookout has been on the second floor at 41 York Street for more than 20 years and calls itself Ottawa's favourite gay club. It's the busiest of the three. Its website lists Tuesday 7pm to midnight, Wednesday to Friday 7pm to 2am, Saturday 3pm to 2am and Sunday 3pm to 11pm, and it's closed on Mondays.
- Drag: Friday and Saturday at 8:30pm (seated show) and 11:30pm (dance-floor show). Tickets are sold on Eventbrite, or pay at the door.
- Other nights: Thursday is a local drag competition, Wednesday and Sunday are karaoke, and there are themed nights such as a sapphic night hosted by drag artists.
- In summer: the balcony over York Street.
- LIVE! on Elgin, 220 Elgin Street: a mainstream live-music room with a recurring drag series, Drag Me To Live!, hosted by Eden Moore, plus boylesque shows.
- Club SAW, Arts Court, 67 Nicholas Street: SAW's party and concert room, with frequent queer dance parties and touring Drag Race performers. Check the Arts Court calendar.
- Lez Go, Queen St. Fare, 170 Queen Street: parties for lesbians and queer women several times a year, most recently on 31 October 2026.
- Drag brunches and bingo: they move around restaurants and pubs in the city and suburbs. Eventbrite's Ottawa drag listings are the most complete place to look for the coming week.
- Bears: the Ottawa Bears hold monthly socials and a Bear Frolic weekend each October.
- Centretown Pub and Cell Block, 340 Somerset Street West: closed in January 2017 after more than 30 years.
- Babylon, 317 Bank Street: closed; the space was listed for lease in 2021.
- Mercury Lounge, ByWard Market: closed. Its Wednesday queer night went with it, and the space now holds other clubs.
- Wilde's and After Stonewall merged as Stonewall Wilde's in 2016; we couldn't confirm it is still open.
- Homo Phono, the long-running queer dance party, last appears in listings in October 2024.
- Bars in Ontario stop serving at 2am. Across the river in Gatineau, bars stay open later and the drinking age is 18.
- Walking from the Lookout to T's Pub takes about 25 minutes; Swizzles sits roughly halfway.
- O-Train Line 1 runs under downtown; Rideau station is closest to the Market and Lyon to Queen Street.
- Late August is the busiest time, when Capital Pride's street festival takes over Bank Street.
- Bring ID. Ottawa bars do check it.
Reviewers praise the staff and the drag; a few say the late crowd skews young.
Swizzles, 246B Queen Street, downtown
Swizzles is a small bar and grill a few blocks north of the Village. It calls itself "Ottawa's only bias-free bar", for "boys, girls and everything in between", and Google lists it as a gay bar. Expect karaoke on several nights, drag, stand-up comedy and a Monday open mic. Its website gives Monday 7pm to midnight, Wednesday to Friday 4pm to 2am, Saturday 7pm to 2am and Sunday 5pm to 2am, closed Tuesday. Directories disagree on some hours, so call 613-232-4200 if it matters.
T's Pub, 323 Somerset Street West, the Village
T's opened in 2017 just off Bank Street and goes by "T's All Welcoming Pub". It's a neighbourhood pub with a patio and food (kitchen Thursday to Sunday, 4 to 9pm), open from 2pm daily until late, and to 2am on Friday and Saturday. Directories list karaoke on Thursdays and Sundays at 8pm and drag with a DJ on Fridays. The Ottawa Knights, the city's leather and denim club, hold a night here on the second Saturday of the month. Events are posted on Instagram, @tspub_ottawa.
Queer nights in other venues
After the bars
Club Ottawa, 1069 Wellington Street West in Hintonburg, is the only gay men's bathhouse in the region, open non-stop from Thursday morning to Sunday night. A taxi from the Market or the Village takes about ten minutes. Probe Ottawa, upstairs from the Lookout at 41 York Street, is a queer-owned members' club for kink and play, open to all genders; you need to join first.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Some apps and old guides also list mainstream bars near the Market and on Bank Street as gay. We checked them and found no LGBTQ+ connection, so they aren't here.
Practical tips
A few words of French
