Stand at the top of Major's Hill Park on an October evening and the whole capital is laid out below you: the Rideau Canal locks stepping down to the river, the Parliament Buildings lit up across the water, the Gatineau Hills going dark on the Quebec side. Behind you, the ByWard Market's bars are filling up and the Château Laurier's copper roofs catch the last light. For decades this hilltop was Ottawa's best-known cruising ground, with a history that runs from police patrols to a murder that changed how the city polices hate crime. Today the honest summary is simple: Ottawa cruises indoors and online. There's one bathhouse, Club Ottawa in Hintonburg, a handful of bars, busy apps, and a park whose reputation is older than most of the men on Grindr.

Legal in one line: Canada has had nationwide same-sex marriage since 2005, and sexual orientation and gender identity are protected from discrimination. Bathhouses are legal private venues for adults; sex in a public place is not (it's an "indecent act" under section 173 of the Criminal Code). The drinking age is 19 in Ontario and 18 across the river in Quebec.

Major's Hill Park

Major's Hill Park sits at the corner of Sussex Drive and Mackenzie Avenue, across Mackenzie from the United States Embassy, with the National Gallery of Canada to the north and the Fairmont Château Laurier to the south. The National Capital Commission (NCC), which runs it, calls it the Capital's first park: it has been used as one since 1826, when work on the Rideau Canal began, and was formally established in 1875. It covers about five hectares of lawns, winding paths and old trees, with lookouts over the Ottawa Locks, the river and Parliament Hill.

What it is today

By day it's one of the city's busiest green spaces: tulips in spring, picnics and festival crowds in summer, tourists walking between the Market and the National Gallery. The NCC lists seasonal washrooms (May to October, 8:00 to dusk, no later than 21:00) and Tavern on the Hill, a seasonal canteen and patio in Header House, the last surviving piece of the park's old greenhouses. The NCC publishes no general opening hours for the park itself. It is federal land, so NCC rules apply alongside the Criminal Code.

The cruising history

Ottawa's LGBT history project Village Legacy describes Major's Hill Park as a well-known gay cruising site for decades. Its shrubbery offered privacy, and it lay close to other queer hangouts and to Mackenzie Avenue, then a known hustler strip. For men whose careers and marriages depended on staying in the closet, cruising was often the only way to meet. It was also dangerous: activist David Pepper described an Ottawa police practice he called the "Fruit Patrol", and young men came to the park to "roll a queer", assaulting and robbing gay men who rarely dared report it.

In the late 1980s, a series of men fell, or were thrown, from the park's cliffs, including Martin Mallon on 1 July 1987 and Peter Vainola in June 1989. Police at first treated the falls as unrelated accidents, and the NCC cleared some of the shrubbery. Then, on 21 August 1989, Alain Brosseau, a 33-year-old waiter at the Château Laurier, was chased through the park on his way home by a gang of teenagers, who dangled him from the Alexandra Bridge and let him fall to his death. They had taken him for gay; he wasn't. CBC reports that the case led the Ottawa Police Service to create a new unit that became Canada's first hate crimes unit. Community activists started a "Blow the Whistle" safety campaign and began training police on LGBT issues.

If you go

We found no recent independent reports of how much cruising still happens here; most current accounts of the park talk about the views and the tulips. Historically the activity was after dark, when the park is quiet and its edges, above the canal and the river, drop away steeply. If you walk here, treat it as a public park first: other people, police and NCC staff can be around at any hour, and it's a few minutes from the Market's late-night crowds. Meeting someone here and going somewhere private is legal; sex here isn't.

The law: under section 173 of the Criminal Code, it's an offence to commit an indecent act in a public place in the presence of one or more people, or anywhere with intent to insult or offend someone. A park, a trail or a car park counts as a public place, even at night. It can be prosecuted as a summary or an indictable offence, and a conviction can follow you across borders.

Safety: robberies and assaults on men in quiet parks are not only history. Go while there's still light, tell a friend where you are, carry only your phone, ID and a little cash, stay away from the cliff edges in the dark, and leave if something feels wrong. If you are attacked, call 911.

Winter: from December to March, temperatures regularly fall well below freezing, the washrooms are closed and the paths are icy. Club Ottawa is warm, legal and open non-stop from Thursday to Sunday.

Club Ottawa: the indoor option

Club Ottawa, at 1069 Wellington Street West (K1Y 2Y2) in Hintonburg, is a men-only bathhouse and, according to Travel Gay and misterb&b, Ottawa's only one. It's basic and old-school rather than a spa.

    • Facilities: lockers, private rooms, a steam room and showers, according to the club's website; listings and visitors add a dry sauna, a sling room, a mattress room, a video lounge, glory holes and free condoms.
    • Hours (official website): Monday to Wednesday 10:00 to midnight, then non-stop from Thursday at 10:00 until Sunday at 23:00. Travel Gay's May 2026 listing gives the same pattern.
    • Prices (website, at the time of writing, eight hours): locker CA$27; rooms CA$34 to CA$58. Lockers for 18 to 24-year-olds are $15, and the weekday "Morning Wood" deal gives four hours in a locker for $15 if you arrive between 10:00 and noon.
    • Crowd: reviews describe a mostly mature, mixed crowd, quieter on weekdays and busier at weekends. Bring photo ID and call 613-722-8978 to check before you go.

The same address has a history of its own: on 22 May 1976, police raided the Club Baths here, arresting 27 men and seizing a membership list of more than 3,000 names.

Closed: Steamworks for Men on Lewis Street in Centretown and the Edge Sauna at 63 Bank Street have both closed. Older guides may still list them.

    Bars: meet face to face

The Bank Street Village in Centretown is Ottawa's gay village, recognised by the city in 2011 and marked by rainbow signs at Bank's intersections with Nepean, Somerset and Frank Streets.

    • T's Pub, 323 Somerset Street West: a relaxed village pub with a patio, DJs, some drag and pub food. Travel Gay lists it open from 14:00, until 02:00 Thursday to Saturday.
    • Swizzles, 246B Queen Street, downtown: karaoke, stand-up and game nights, open evenings until 02:00 (closed Tuesdays, according to Travel Gay).
    • Lookout Bar, 41 York Street, upstairs, in the ByWard Market: a balcony, karaoke on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and drag at weekends; closed Mondays. It's a short walk from Major's Hill Park.

    Apps

    • Grindr and Scruff are the usual apps on both sides of the river.
    • Sniffies, the map-based cruising app, is widely used across North America for real-time meet-ups, and in a city that freezes for four months a year it's where much of Ottawa's cruising now happens.
    • If you're hosting, meet in a bar first, and don't let a stranger into your hotel room on the strength of one chat.

    Across the river: Gatineau

Gatineau (the old city of Hull) is in Quebec, a bridge away from Parliament and the Market. It's French-speaking, the drinking age is 18, and it has no gay sauna; searches in French and English turned up only regular Nordic spas. Its LGBTQ+ community organisation is Jeunesse Idem, founded in 1995 for young 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and in 2024 it helped the city raise the rainbow flag at City Hall for Gatineau's own Pride Week in August. For a night out, most people cross to Ottawa; for a bigger scene, Montreal is about two hours away.

    Thunderhead and the Purge

A walk west from Parliament Hill along the river path brings you to Thunderhead, Canada's 2SLGBTQI+ National Monument, which opened on 21 August 2026. Its mirrored "cloud" commemorates the LGBT Purge, the federal campaign that pushed an estimated 9,000 people out of the military, the RCMP and the public service from the 1950s into the 1990s. In a city where the police once patrolled Major's Hill Park looking for gay men, it's worth the detour.

    Local colour

Do it the Ottawa way: a BeaverTail, the stretched, fried pastry sold in the ByWard Market, with cinnamon sugar, then a drink on a Market patio before the light goes. In winter, the Rideau Canal becomes a skateway when the ice allows, and the rest of the city moves indoors. You'll hear French and English in the same sentence, and shop staff greet you with "Bonjour-Hi".

    Practical tips

    • Getting to Major's Hill Park: the nearest O-Train station is Rideau (Line 1), under Rideau Street by the Rideau Centre; walk north past the Château Laurier. Line 1 runs from early morning until about 01:00 Monday to Thursday and 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, closing earlier on Sundays; check OC Transpo for current times.
    • Getting to Club Ottawa: the nearest Line 1 stations are Tunney's Pasture and Bayview, a walk from Wellington Street West. Late at night, a taxi or Uber from Centretown or the Market is quicker.
    • Gatineau: STO buses connect with the O-Train at Lyon and Pimisi stations.
    • Paying: tap a Presto card or contactless bank card on OC Transpo; fares rose in January 2026, so check the current price.
    • Health: for PEP after a possible HIV exposure, go to a hospital emergency department as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours. MAX Ottawa supports gay, bi and queer men's health. Bring your own condoms and PrEP if you use it.
    • Weather: a proper coat, gloves and a toque from December to March.

    Capital Pride 2026

Capital Pride (Fierté dans la Capitale) ran from 22 to 30 August 2026. The street festival filled Bank Street on 29 and 30 August, and the Pride Parade stepped off on Sunday 30 August at 13:00, running from Booth and Wellington past the Parliament buildings to Bank and Slater. Olympic hockey player Brianne Jenner was grand marshal. Thunderhead opened the week before. Dates for 2027 hadn't been announced at the time of writing; check Capital Pride's website.

    A few words of French

    • Merci – thank you.
    • Gai – gay.
    • Drague – cruising; in Quebec you'll also hear cruiser, to flirt.
    • Parc – park. Pont – bridge.

Frequently asked questions

Where do gay men cruise in Ottawa?

Mostly indoors and online. Club Ottawa, the men-only bathhouse at 1069 Wellington Street West in Hintonburg, is the city's only gay sauna, and Grindr, Scruff and Sniffies are widely used. Major's Hill Park, downtown, has a cruising reputation going back decades, but public sex is a criminal offence in Canada.

Is Major's Hill Park still a cruising spot?

It was a well-known cruising area for decades, and the park is still listed as one. We found no recent independent reports of how active it is today. It is a busy public park run by the National Capital Commission, and the attacks of the late 1980s are a reminder to be careful there after dark.

Is cruising in a park legal in Canada?

Meeting someone in a park is legal; having sex there is not. Section 173 of the Criminal Code makes it an offence to commit an indecent act in a public place in the presence of one or more people. A park counts as a public place at any hour.

What are Club Ottawa's hours?

According to the club's website, it opens 10am to midnight Monday to Wednesday, then non-stop from Thursday at 10am until Sunday at 11pm. At the time of writing, an eight-hour locker costs CA$27. Call 613-722-8978 to check before you go.

When was Capital Pride 2026?

From 22 to 30 August 2026. The street festival filled Bank Street on 29 and 30 August, and the parade ran on Sunday 30 August from 1pm, from Booth and Wellington to Bank and Slater.
