Memorial Weekend Pensacola
About This Event
Memorial Weekend Pensacola is a five-day gay beach party on Pensacola Beach. It is not a Pride march. Local accounts trace it back to beach parties hosted by Ray and Henry Hillyer of the Emma Jones Society in the 1950s and 60s. Those parties were originally on the Fourth of July weekend and later moved to Memorial Day. The weekend took its current mass form in the early 1990s, when local politicians openly opposed it. Visitors responded by stamping their cash with pink triangles to show how much they spent. Johnny Chisholm, co-owner of the now-closed Emerald City nightclub, has run the main parties since the 1990s.
By day, crowds put up shade tents on the sand at Park East, which runs east of Portofino Island Resort toward the National Seashore, and there are afternoon tea dances. At night, circuit-style parties with DJs run under a large white tent until about 3:30am, and some of them are alcohol-free. The beach itself is free, but the parties need passes, which are sold through Eventbrite. Rooms on the beach and in Gulf Breeze sell out first, so book months ahead. Expect strong sun and Gulf humidity. The weekend has carried on through Florida's recent anti-LGBTQ laws.
The 2026 edition ran from Thursday 21 to Monday 25 May. Local press describes crowds of tens of thousands, but we couldn't confirm any actual count. Johnny Chisholm Presents is already selling 2027 passes, and its beach permit window opens on Thursday 27 May 2027. Memorial Day 2027 falls on 31 May.
