Gay Bars & Clubs in Praia: The Honest Picture
Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde, does not have any dedicated gay bars or clubs. That is simply the reality of a small Atlantic-island capital rather than a sign of hostility — Cabo Verde decriminalized same-sex relations back in 2004 and is one of Africa's more relaxed countries for LGBTQ+ visitors. What Praia offers instead is a handful of welcoming, mixed-crowd venues where LGBTQ+ travellers can have a good night out without a second thought.
Where the Nightlife Is
There is no "gay village" here. Praia's going-out scene clusters in two areas: the historic Platô (Plateau) in the centre, with its live-music restaurants and bars, and the beach strips at Quebra Canela and Prainha, where the open-air bars and clubs fill up on weekends. Both are easy, sociable places to start an evening.
Gay-Friendly Venues Worth Knowing
Quintal da Música
A Praia institution on Platô, Quintal da Música is a live-music restaurant and bar built around Cape Verdean sounds — morna, coladeira, funaná and batuque performed most nights. The crowd is a genuine local-and-visitor mix and the atmosphere is warm and unpretentious. It is the single best place to feel the "alma" (soul) of the islands over dinner and drinks.
Kebra Cabana
Down on Quebra Canela beach, Kebra Cabana is a relaxed beach bar and restaurant that turns into a lively spot after dark, especially in the warmer months. Sunset drinks by the Atlantic, casual food and an easy-going mixed crowd make it a comfortable choice.
Bar Secreto Ibérico
An Iberian-style tapas gastrobar in the Palmarejo area, Bar Secreto Ibérico is a smaller, more intimate option for wine, cocktails and small plates in a friendly, low-key setting.
A Note for Visitors
Because none of these venues is specifically an LGBTQ+ business, the vibe is "welcoming and mixed" rather than "scene." The bigger LGBTQ+ moment on Praia's calendar is the Marcha do Orgulho LGBTIQ+ (Pride march), held in early July in Platô.
