It's ten at night on Pike Street, the drizzle has turned the pavement into a mirror, and men in leather jackets are stepping out of a rideshare in front of a bar that has been pouring drinks for the leather crowd for decades. Seattle's gay life is packed into a few blocks of Capitol Hill, and so is its cruising. The honest picture in 2026: two bathhouses open round the clock within walking distance of each other, two leather bars with big decks and gear nights, a couple of parks with long cruising histories and real legal risks, and the apps for everything else.

Legal in one line: sex between men is legal in Washington State, and same-sex couples have been able to marry since 2012. Sex in public is not: under RCW 9A.88.010, an open and obscene exposure likely to cause affront or alarm is indecent exposure, a misdemeanour that becomes a class C felony for anyone with a previous conviction.

The bathhouses

Seattle has two gay bathhouses, and both are on Capitol Hill, a few minutes' walk from the bars. Both list themselves as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Full details are on our Seattle saunas page.

Steamworks Seattle · 1520 Summit Avenue

Steamworks is part of the bathhouse group that started in Berkeley in 1976, and its Seattle branch sits just off the Pike/Pine corridor. Entry is for members and their guests, so bring photo ID and expect to buy a membership on your first visit. Directory listings describe four kinds of private rooms (one with a glory hole), a play lounge with slings, a video lounge, lockers and showers. Listings and visitors disagree on whether there's a working steam room or sauna, so if the heat matters to you, ask before you pay. Travel Gay listed a weekly Anonymous Night on Mondays in 2025; check the bathhouse's own site (swbaths.com) or call 206 388 4818 for current theme nights and prices.

Club Z · 1117 Pike Street

Club Z, also branded the Z Club or Zodiac Social Club, has been in business on Pike Street for more than 30 years, according to Travel Gay. It's the one with the classic bathhouse kit: a dry sauna and steam room, a continuously running video theatre, private and themed rooms, lockers, showers and a members' lounge. Listings mention themed nights (leather, movies, 1980s video games) and daily "qwik play" sessions. Gay City, Seattle's LGBTQ+ centre, runs a wellness space on site with confidential HIV and STI testing several days a week. Renting a room requires a membership. Hornet reported that the century-old building had been put on the market for $2.15 million, the first time in almost 40 years, with the option of keeping the club as a tenant; the club was still listed as open in 2025. Call 206 622 9958 to check before you go.

Leather and cruise bars

Neither of these is a sex club, but they're where the leather, bear and gear crowd drinks, and where plenty of nights on the Hill start. See our Seattle bars page for the rest of the scene.

The Cuff Complex · 1533 13th Avenue

The Cuff opened in 1993 as a leather, Levi's and uniform tavern and grew into a 7,000-square-foot complex with four bars, a dance floor, pool tables and one of the Hill's best-loved outdoor patios. It's the home bar of Seattle Men in Leather and Northwest Bears. The Seattle Gay News reported that it changed hands in March 2025, when Scott Walent bought it from Joey Burgess and promised to keep its traditions while adding new programming. Listings give hours of 4pm to 2am Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 4pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday; it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Friday and Saturday are DJ nights. There's no formal dress code, but gear is always welcome.

Seattle Eagle · 314 E Pike Street

The Eagle calls itself "Capitol Hill's original leather bar since 1981". It's dark and unpretentious inside, with chain-link fencing and pool tables, and has a big back deck that becomes a scene of its own on warm nights. Expect underwear nights, themed parties and hip-hop nights with lasers, and a mostly male, bear-friendly crowd. Listings give opening hours of 4pm to 2am daily. In 2024 state liquor inspectors took issue with fetish attire at the bar, and the community's response helped push changes at state level; it was still running its usual nights in 2025.

Closed: Basic Plumbing, the Capitol Hill men's club, shut in 2012; its old space is now the Lost Lake diner.

Volunteer Park and the Arboretum: what to know

Volunteer Park, at the north end of Capitol Hill, is the neighbourhood's big Victorian park, with its water tower, conservatory and amphitheatre. It has been a meeting place for gay men since at least the 1920s and 1930s, and it has hosted Pride gatherings since the 1970s. Its night-time side has drawn attention before: in January 1990 the Seattle Times reported that police officers had told the city's parks commission that night-time sex was the park's "biggest problem", alongside robberies and drug dealing, and had suggested closing the whole park from 11pm to 6am. By day it's a family park full of joggers, dog walkers and people visiting the Asian Art Museum.

The Washington Park Arboretum, a large wooded botanical garden run by the University of Washington Botanic Gardens with the city, stretches between Montlake and Madison Valley on the edge of Lake Washington, with miles of trails through the trees. It also has a reputation as a cruising ground. By day it's a popular walking and birdwatching spot.

The law: under RCW 9A.88.010, a person commits indecent exposure by intentionally making an open and obscene exposure of themselves or another, knowing it is likely to cause reasonable affront or alarm. It's a misdemeanour; a gross misdemeanour if the exposure is to someone under 14; and a class C felony for anyone with a previous conviction for indecent exposure or a sex offence. Under state law, police can arrest for indecent exposure without a warrant if they have probable cause. A conviction can have consequences far beyond the fine, including for future travel and visas.

Safety: both parks are dark and isolated after nightfall, and robbery has been reported in Volunteer Park for decades. Carry as little as possible, keep your phone charged, tell a friend where you are, and leave if anything feels wrong. Never leave anything visible in a parked car. In an emergency, call 911.

Local colour

Seattle's gay life runs along the Pike/Pine corridor on Capitol Hill, where old car showrooms have become bars and the crosswalks are painted in rainbow stripes. Cal Anderson Park, named after the state's first openly gay legislator, is the neighbourhood's living room. Fuel up the Seattle way: a strong coffee in the afternoon, teriyaki or pho before a long night, and a waterproof jacket rather than an umbrella. Bars close at 2am, so the night usually ends at a bathhouse or on the apps.

Seattle Pride 2026

The Seattle Pride Parade ran on Sunday 28 June 2026, from 11am to about 3:30pm, starting at Westlake Park on 4th Avenue downtown and ending near Seattle Center on Denny Way. This year's theme was "Rally", following 2025's "Louder". A ticketed, 21+ Pride music festival filled Capitol Hill from 26 to 28 June, and PrideFest took over Seattle Center on the Sunday after the parade. The Cuff holds its annual Pride Day street party on 13th Avenue, and both bathhouses are at their busiest that weekend. Seattle Pride is held on the last weekend of June; check seattlepride.org for 2027 dates.

Practical tips

    • ID and membership: both bathhouses work on membership, and every bar will card you. Foreign visitors should carry a passport. The drinking age is 21.
    • Lockers and phones: use the lockers at the bathhouses and keep your phone out of sight in play areas. No photos.
    • Consent: a hand moved away means no. Ask, and respect the answer.
    • Getting home: the Capitol Hill Link light rail station sits right by the bars and both bathhouses, with trains to downtown and the airport, but Link doesn't run all night. Check the last train on soundtransit.org and plan on a rideshare or taxi after the bars close.
    • PEP: PEP must start within 72 hours, and sooner is better. In business hours, call Public Health – Seattle & King County on 206 744 5100, or contact the Madison Clinic at Harborview Medical Center, 325 9th Avenue (206 520 5000). Out of hours, go to the Harborview Emergency Department at the same address. Harborview says you can get PEP whatever your ability to pay.
    • Testing and PrEP: Public Health – Seattle & King County runs a Sexual Health Clinic at Harborview, and Gay City offers free HIV and STI testing, including at Club Z.
    • Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol, never dose for someone else, and call 911 if someone won't wake up.
    • Apps: Grindr and Sniffies are where most hook-ups start. Meet first in a bar or other public place and share your location with a friend.
