Evening in Thessaloniki starts on the seafront. The whole city walks the promenade towards the White Tower while the Thermaic Gulf turns gold, and on clear days Mount Olympus hangs over the water. A few streets inland from the port, though, the mood changes: Vardaris, the old railway and market district, is all shuttered shops, cheap hotels and dim side streets. That is where the city's cruising lives. The scene is small and almost entirely indoors: one cruise and fetish club, one men's sex cinema and one gay sauna, all within a few minutes' walk of Vardaris Square.
Legal in one line: Greece decriminalised sex between men in 1951, introduced civil partnerships in 2015 and opened civil marriage to same-sex couples in February 2024 (Law 5089/2024). Cruise clubs, sex cinemas and saunas are legal private venues for adults. Sexual acts in public are not: Article 353 of the Penal Code (offending another person's sexual decency) makes them a criminal misdemeanour.
How cruising works in Thessaloniki
Everything is clustered around Vardaris Square (Plateia Dimokratias), at the western edge of the centre near the port. You pay at the door, usually in cash, and inside there are darkrooms, cabins and mazes rather than a bar scene. The venues open in the afternoon, so unlike most European cities you don't have to wait for midnight. Many men start with a drink in the gay bars around Valaoritou Street, about ten minutes' walk east, and Grindr is the main app.
Cruise club and cinema
Play
Play, at Odysseos 13 (Οδυσσέως 13), is Thessaloniki's men-only cruise and fetish club: three floors of about 300 m² with darkrooms, a maze, a sling, a St Andrew's cross, cages, a "jail", many private cabins and chill-out areas. There's also a small adult shop, and Greek business directories list it among the city's sex shops. Entry was listed at about €8. It opens in the afternoon and stays open until around 02:00, and until 04:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. There is no real bar, just a drinks machine, and no sauna. A couple of 2024 reviewers said they were refused entry, so arrive sober and be polite at the door.
Blue Vision
Blue Vision, at Afroditis 6 (Αφροδίτης 6), right by Vardaris Square, is a men-only sex cinema with three screening rooms, glory holes and private cabins. Entry is listed at €7. It opens at 10:00 and closes around 02:00, staying open until about 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. It's busiest at weekends, with men of all ages, and it's the one place in town where daytime cruising is a realistic option.
The sauna
AquaSplash, at Vakchou 14 (Βάκχου 14), is the former Splash Sauna, now renamed and in a renovated three-floor building of about 400 m². It has a dry sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, plus cabins, a maze, glory holes, a darkroom and a roof terrace. It opens around 17:00, closes around 01:00 on weeknights and later on Fridays and Saturdays, and is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Older reports put entry at about €10–13. Weekend evenings after 20:00 are busiest. Hours, prices and tips are in our Thessaloniki saunas guide.
Sex shops
Besides the shop inside Play, the main adult chain near Vardaris is Eros Megastores, with a branch at Afroditis 3, opposite Blue Vision, and another at Giannitson 29. They are ordinary sex shops; we found no current source for video cabins in them.
Changed or closed: Splash Sauna is now AquaSplash at Vakchou 14. Some older guides describe Play as having a sauna and jacuzzi; it doesn't. TS14, a trans-run bar at Odysseos 5 with drag and strip shows, is listed as closed by misterb&b.
Outdoors
We don't cover outdoor cruising spots in Thessaloniki. Whatever older forums say, Greek law treats sex in public as a crime, and the three venues above cover the whole week.
The law and your safety:
- The law: under Article 353 of the Greek Penal Code (prosvolí tis genetísias evprépeias, offending sexual decency), sexual acts or exposure in front of others are a misdemeanour. In the 2019 code the basic penalty is a fine or community service, rising to up to three years in prison if a child under 15 is present.
- Police: if police approach you, stay calm and polite and show your ID. Emergency number: 112, police 100.
- Vardaris at night: the streets around the venues are dim and empty after 01:00. They are not known as dangerous, but arrive and leave by taxi late at night rather than walking the back streets.
- Valuables: carry only your phone, a card and a little cash, and use the lockers.
- Metro: Thessaloniki's metro opened in November 2024 and runs across the centre; Dimokratias station is on Vardaris Square, a few minutes' walk from all three venues. In June 2026 trains ran daily from 05:15 to 23:00, after a pause from 29 May to 19 June while the extension to Kalamaria was being tested. It doesn't run late, so plan for a taxi home.
- Buses and night service: OASTH buses cover the whole city. In December 2025 the metro and six bus lines (OASTH 6, 14, 27 and 32, plus 58 and 66) ran through the night on two Saturdays as a pilot; check OASTH and the metro operator for any late-night service before relying on it.
- Taxis: taxis are the easiest way home after the metro closes. FreeNow is the main taxi app.
- Cash: bring euros in small notes for entry and lockers.
- Lockers and phones: lock away your phone and wallet before heading into the darkrooms. No photos, ever.
- Consent: a shake of the head or "óchi" (no) is enough. Walk away if anyone doesn't take it.
- PEP: if you've had a risk, go to the emergency department of a public hospital as soon as possible, and within 72 hours at most. The city's infectious diseases unit is at AHEPA University Hospital, Stilponos Kyriakidi 1 (tel. 2313 303653).
- Testing and PrEP: Checkpoint Thessaloniki, run by the community organisation Positive Voice, offers free HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis testing, counselling and condoms. Positive Voice reported that free PrEP distribution began in Greece in 2025; ask at the Checkpoint about how to access it.
- Chems: never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol and never dose for someone else. In an emergency call 112.
- Bars first: eNola (Valaoritou 19, 2nd floor) is the long-running gay club, and Big Bar Thess (Margariti Lori 5) is the bear bar, listed open Wednesday to Sunday from 20:30. Neither is a cruise bar. See our Thessaloniki bars guide.
- Yia sou (Γεια σου) – hi / bye.
- Efcharistó (Ευχαριστώ) – thank you.
- Póso káni i ísodos? (Πόσο κάνει η είσοδος;) – how much is entry?
- Ntoulápi (ντουλάπι) – locker. Petséta (πετσέτα) – towel.
- Óchi, efcharistó (Όχι, ευχαριστώ) – no, thanks. Stamáta (Σταμάτα) – stop.
- Profylaktikó (προφυλακτικό) – condom.
- Yamas! (Γειά μας!) – cheers!
A Thessaloniki day, the local way
Thessaloniki is a city that eats on the move. Start the morning with a warm bougatsa (μπουγάτσα), flaky filo filled with semolina custard and dusted with icing sugar and cinnamon, or the savoury version with cheese or mince, and an iced freddo espresso facing the sea. Through the day you'll see street vendors selling koulouri (κουλούρι Θεσσαλονίκης), the city's crisp sesame bread ring, the cheapest snack in town. In the evening, walk the seafront, then eat late in Ladadika, the old warehouse quarter by the port, over small plates of meze and a carafe of tsipouro, the local grape spirit. Vardaris is a ten-minute walk west.
Practical tips
Thessaloniki Pride 2026
The 14th Thessaloniki Pride ran from 15 to 20 June 2026, with talks, parties and an information day at City Hall during the week. The parade set off from White Tower Square at 18:30 on Saturday 20 June and looped along Ethnikis Aminis, Tsimiski, Venizelou and the seafront Leoforos Nikis back to the square, followed by a concert and an after-party at Enola. Early in the march, a man dressed in robes resembling a monk's lay down in front of a float shouting "Repent"; police removed and detained him and another man, and the parade carried on. Thessaloniki hosted EuroPride in June 2024. For 2027 dates, check thessalonikipride.com.
