Gay Santa Cruz de la Sierra: the honest 2026 guide

The honest summary: Santa Cruz de la Sierra is Bolivia's biggest city, with about 1.6 million people in the municipality (2024 census), hot, flat and built around concentric ring roads (anillos). It held Bolivia's first Pride march in 2000, and in August 2026 its civil registry recorded the country's first same-sex marriage. The nightlife is a different story: there is no gay district and only a couple of venues we could confirm. Most of the queer scene runs on Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp, and places open and close quickly. Expect one club, one men's sauna, a handful of organisations and a lively Pride week in late June, not a bar crawl.

Legal in one line: Same-sex relations have been legal in Bolivia since 1832, the 2009 constitution (Art. 14) and Ley 045 (2010) ban discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity, and same-sex couples can register a de facto union (unión libre) since 2023; marriage is still defined as between a man and a woman, and the 2026 Santa Cruz marriage covered one couple by court order.

Bars and clubs

The one club we could confirm as open in October 2026 is Queens Open Mind (Queens Club), on the 4th ring at Radial 27 and Av. Banzer in the north of the city. "Open mind" is the local code for LGBTQ+; listings describe a mostly male crowd on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, and its Instagram (@queensopenmind) posts the weekly flyers. It's a taxi ride from the old town.

Other names come up on Google Maps and TikTok, but we couldn't confirm them with a second, recent source, so we haven't listed them:

  • Los Angels / Angel's, a gay disco that TikTok users place near Radial 13, said to open Wednesday to Sunday from 8pm.
  • Club Misterio (listed as "Misstery Gay Bar") on Calle Bolívar in the centre, which runs a Telegram group.
  • Black Cat Bar on Av. Busch, tagged "gay bar" on Maps.

If you want to try them, ask in local groups first. Mainstream nightlife is concentrated in Equipetrol, along Av. San Martín, and in the bars around the main square. Equipetrol is the city's party district, but it isn't a gay area, whatever some travel blurbs say.

Saunas

Be careful with the word "sauna" in Bolivia: most are family steam baths and gyms. The men-only one is Sauna Olimpo, Calle Río Verde 79, off Av. Piraí between the 2nd and 3rd rings. Google Maps files it as a gay sauna, and GayCities gives the same address for Sauna Roma VIP, so it is probably the same place under a newer name. We couldn't confirm prices or hours; check its Facebook page (saunaolimposa) first. Don't confuse it with Olimpo Sauna Gimnasio on Av. Los Cusis, which is an ordinary gym. Two other "gay sauna" pins on Maps (Boiler on the 3rd ring, Sauna Roma on Calle Fernando Paticu) had no other trace online.

Cruising

We don't list outdoor cruising areas in Bolivia. Same-sex relations are legal, but the social climate is conservative and public sex can be prosecuted as an offence against public decency. Use the apps with the usual care: meet in public first, tell someone where you're going, and don't carry more cash than you need.

Community, health and support

  • Fundación Igualdad LGBT, Calle Charcas 170 in the old town, founded in 2007. A rights organisation with a community centre and the podcast "Las Igualadas"; a good first contact for what's on locally.
  • Manodiversa offers free, anonymous HIV and syphilis tests, counselling, condoms and lube. Book through manodiversa.org.
  • CDVIR, Av. Isabel la Católica 157, is the health department's HIV and STI centre, with free public testing. El Deber has counted 53 centres in the city that offer HIV diagnosis.
  • Other groups you'll see at Pride: Colectivo La Pesada Subversiva (co-organiser of the march), the Movimiento de las Diversidades Sexuales (an umbrella of more than 20 groups) and Casa Trans Pamela Valenzuela, a trans shelter backed by OTRAF.

Pride and events

The Marcha del Orgullo LGBT de Santa Cruz de la Sierra started on 27 June 2000, when about 50 people marched in the Parque Urbano Central; it was the first in Bolivia. Since around 2018 there have been two marches. A daytime political march leaves the old town and passes the cathedral and the courts. An evening parade with floats runs from Manzana Uno to Plaza del Estudiante and ends with shows.

In 2025 the political march was on Friday 27 June at 9am and the parade on Saturday 28 June at 6pm, organised by La Pesada Subversiva with the city's culture office, according to El Deber. The 2026 political march was on Friday 26 June, about access to justice (Infobae). The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing; expect the last weekend of June. In June 2025 the MAC contemporary art museum also hosted the drag night Dragpallooza and the last edition of the exhibition "Revolución Orgullo".

Where to stay

There's no gay hotel. The big international and local hotels are used to same-sex couples, and nobody will blink at a shared bed. Two sensible bases:

Avoid the cheap "alojamientos" in the centre: many rent rooms by the hour.

Getting around

Viru Viru International Airport (VVI) is about 15 km north of the centre; the old El Trompillo airport has had no scheduled flights since 2018. Distances are long and the heat is real, so most visitors use taxis or apps. Uber, inDrive and Yango all work in Santa Cruz. Micros (minibuses) are cheap but hard to follow without Spanish. Walking is fine in the old town by day; at night, take a car door to door.

Money: Bolivia let the boliviano float in June 2026 after years at 6.96 to the dollar, and the rate has moved a lot since. Check it before you travel, and carry some cash, because small places don't take cards. In 2026 road blockades have cut highways for days at a time, so check the news before any trip out of the city.

Safety

Santa Cruz is more relaxed than the highlands, but Bolivia is still a conservative, Catholic country. Read the room before showing affection in public. The bigger risks are the same as in any large South American city: phone snatching, robberies in unmarked taxis, and robberies set up through dating apps. Use app taxis at night and meet dates somewhere public.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

Old blogs and guides still list venues we couldn't find any trace of after 2018: Tantra (Calle Bolívar 457), Space Disco (3rd ring), Alejandro's (Warnes y Cochabamba), Traffic / Fusión (Av. El Trompillo), Gayless (3rd ring), Closset y la Condesa (Alameda Junín), K-Maleón and Lorca. Treat them as closed. "Open Mind Club" is a La Paz venue, not a Santa Cruz one.

Day trips and beyond

Samaipata, about 120 km west, has the El Fuerte ruins (UNESCO) and the cloud forest of Amboró National Park. The Jesuit missions of Chiquitos, also UNESCO-listed, lie to the east; San Javier alone is about 220 km away, so plan two or three days for the circuit. Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is remote and needs a tour operator. For the Amazon pampas, fly via La Paz to Rurrenabaque; it isn't a side trip from Santa Cruz. La Paz has a bigger gay scene; see our La Paz guide and the Cochabamba guide.

A few words in Spanish

  • de ambiente / open mind: gay or LGBTQ+ (of a bar or party)
  • boliche: club
  • la marcha del orgullo: the Pride march
  • prueba de VIH gratuita: free HIV test
  • unión libre: registered de facto union

Domande frequenti

Sì, una: Sauna Olimpo in Calle Río Verde 79, vicino all'Av. Piraí, solo per uomini e probabilmente l'ex Sauna Roma VIP. La maggior parte degli altri locali chiamati "sauna" in Bolivia sono bagni turchi per famiglie o palestre. Controlla la sua pagina Facebook per gli orari.

A fine giugno.
