The honest summary: Surry Hills is not Sydney's gay strip. That's Oxford Street, and the suburb boundary runs right along it, so nearly every famous bar on the strip (the Oxford Hotel, the Colombian, Universal, ARQ) is officially in Darlinghurst. Surry Hills is the leafy, terrace-house neighbourhood just south of it, where a lot of the community lives, eats and drinks. It has one men's cruise club, one pub with a big queer Sunday, the head office of NSW's main LGBTQ health organisation, and some of the best-placed hotels in the city for Mardi Gras.
Legal in one line
NSW decriminalised sex between men in 1984. Same-sex marriage has been legal across Australia since December 2017, and NSW anti-discrimination law covers sexuality and gender identity. Holding hands on Crown Street is unremarkable.
Where Surry Hills actually is
Surry Hills runs from Oxford Street in the north to Cleveland Street in the south. Its western edge is Elizabeth and Chalmers Streets, next to Central Station, and its eastern edge is South Dowling Street. It shares the 2010 postcode with Darlinghurst, which is why so many listings blur the two. The 2021 census counted about 15,800 residents. Crown Street is the main drag for restaurants, wine bars and shops. Bourke Street, to the east, is quieter and leafier.
Bars and clubs in Surry Hills
Trough X, 273 Crown St. A men-only cruise and fetish club a few minutes' walk south of Oxford Street. The space was called Headquarters, then Trade; Star Observer reported new owners in February 2024. It runs a weekday bar-and-cruise format, a Saturday dance-and-cruise night and a men-only Sunday session, with ticketed nights sold through Humanitix. Check trough.events for the current week before you go.
The Beresford, 354 Bourke St. In Australia a "hotel" is often a pub, and this is one: a large Merivale venue with a leafy courtyard, wood-fired pizza and cocktails. The crowd is mixed most of the week. Sunday evening is the queer one. Star Observer describes Beresford Sundays as starting from about 7pm, with house DJs and drag, and the Destination NSW nightlife guide calls the Beresford very popular with gay men. It's closed on Mondays.
Surry Hills has no gay sauna. The two operating ones are in Darlinghurst: Sydney Sauna on Oxford Street and Sauna X on Taylor Street. Search results for "sauna" in Surry Hills are day spas and massage studios, not gay venues. Trough X is the suburb's only men's cruise venue. We don't publish outdoor cruising spots.
Community and health
ACON, the NSW LGBTQ health organisation, has its head office at 414 Elizabeth St, Surry Hills, near Central Station. Its sexual-health services, including the Check OUT clinic, run from there on weekdays. Positive Life NSW, the HIV peer organisation, is listed at the same address.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Headquarters / Trade (273 Crown St): both are old names for the space that is now Trough X.
The Bookshop Darlinghurst: the gay bookshop started on Crown Street in Surry Hills, moved to Oxford Street in 1984, and announced it would close at the end of 2025 after 43 years (Star Observer).
Signal: a sex-on-premises venue on the Darlinghurst side of Riley Street. It closed in November 2019.
Stonewall Hotel (175 Oxford St, Darlinghurst): closed in early 2026. The brand carries on as Stonewall Newtown.
Mardi Gras and events
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is the big one. According to Mardi Gras and Star Observer, the 2027 festival runs from 12 February to 7 March. The parade is on Saturday 6 March 2027, under the theme "Hyperbloom". The route follows Oxford Street, Flinders Street and Anzac Parade, along the northern and eastern edges of Surry Hills. If you stay here on parade night, you can walk to the barriers and home again. Fair Day, the community picnic that opens the festival, is in Victoria Park, Camperdown, not Surry Hills. Apart from venue parties such as the Beresford's Mardi Gras weekend, Surry Hills has no Pride event of its own.
Where to stay
For Mardi Gras or an Oxford Street weekend, Surry Hills is the most practical base in Sydney. All of these are mainstream hotels listed as gay-friendly, not gay hotels.
ADGE Hotel & Residences, 212 Riley St. The former Cambridge Hotel, rebuilt and rebranded in 2023. It's the closest of these to Oxford Street.
Crystalbrook Albion, 21 Little Albion St. A boutique hotel in a converted convent.
Central Station is on the western edge of the suburb, Museum Station is about a kilometre north-west, and the L2/L3 light rail stops on Devonshire Street.
It's hilly. Crown Street climbs all the way up to Oxford Street, so allow ten minutes on foot from the south end.
Sunday is the big night. Between the Beresford and Oxford Street, it's often busier than Saturday.
For Mardi Gras weekend, book months ahead. Every hotel within walking distance of the parade fills up.
A few words
Some Sydney English you'll need: a "hotel" is often a pub, a "schooner" is a beer glass, and "Mardi Gras" means the whole festival season, not just the parade. When locals say "Oxford Street", they mean the gay strip.
