LEGAL STATUS

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in India. In September 2018, the Supreme Court in Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India unanimously read down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, ending the colonial-era criminalization of consensual same-sex relations. That protection carried forward when the penal code was replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in 2023. There's no legal recognition of same-sex marriage, however—the Supreme Court declined to legalize it in October 2023—and no civil partnership, joint adoption, or comprehensive anti-discrimination law covering sexual orientation. Transgender people do have legal recognition of their gender identity under the NALSA judgment (2014) and the Transgender Persons Act (2019). So: you aren't breaking any law by being gay in Mumbai, but the legal scaffolding for equality is still incomplete.

PRACTICAL SAFETY

Mumbai's widely considered India's most liberal and cosmopolitan city, and one of the easiest places in the country to be openly queer. Attitudes in upscale and creative pockets—South Mumbai, Bandra, BKC, Andheri's nightlife strips—are generally relaxed, and the city has a large, visible queer community. That said, India remains socially conservative overall. Overt public displays of affection between any couple, gay or straight, are uncommon. In crowded markets, poorer neighborhoods, or religious sites, a same-sex couple holding hands may draw stares or comments. Reading the room—relaxed in a Bandra café, more discreet on a packed local train—is second nature to local queer Mumbaikars and serves visitors well too.

Dating apps (Grindr, Blued, Delta, Tinder) are widely and openly used across Mumbai. The old fear of app-based police entrapment has faded sharply since decriminalization, but ordinary big-city caution still applies: meet first in public, be wary of anyone pushing to meet somewhere isolated, and stay alert to the occasional robbery or extortion scam that targets hook-up meetings anywhere in the world.

Where to Stay

Hotels: International chains (Taj, Oberoi, ITC, Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton) and most modern business hotels check in same-sex couples to a double room without comment. Smaller family-run guesthouses can be more conservative and may prefer twin beds; when in doubt, book an established property or an LGBTQ-friendly listing.

THE SCENE

Mumbai has a real, if compact, queer scene. It's built around one fixed nightlife anchor plus a strong circuit of roaming party brands and community events.

Kitty Su, the nightclub at The LaLiT hotel in Andheri East, is the flagship. It's India's most prominent gay-friendly club. Its parent hotel group, led by openly gay executive Keshav Suri (a petitioner in the Section 377 case), made LGBTQ+ inclusion a public commitment. Kitty Su runs regular LGBTQ nights, drag galas featuring international and homegrown queens, and headline parties around Pride season.

Salvation Star, running since 2007, is the city's original all-inclusive queer party brand. It's a roaming series of mixers and dance nights hosted at venues around Bandra, BKC, and South Mumbai, promoted through its Instagram and mailing list rather than a fixed address. Community platforms such as Gaysi Family and the long-running Gay Bombay group host DJ nights, drag, karaoke, film screenings, and social meet-ups on an irregular calendar.

There are no dedicated gay saunas or bathhouses in Mumbai. Beyond Kitty Su, most queer nightlife happens as pop-up parties inside mainstream-cool bars and clubs in Bandra, BKC, and Lower Parel. Follow the party brands and community Instagram accounts to see what's on during your visit.

COMMUNITY & EVENTS

The Humsafar Trust, founded in 1994 and headquartered in Vakola (Santa Cruz East), is India's oldest LGBTQ organization. It's a health, counseling, advocacy, and community hub, with youth (Yaariyan) and LBT (Umang) wings. It's the best first point of contact for anyone wanting to plug into local queer life.

Two flagship annual events anchor the calendar. Queer Azaadi Mumbai—the Mumbai Pride march—takes place in the winter, usually late January or February, historically gathering at August Kranti Maidan (Gowalia Tank). KASHISH, the Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, held each June (17th edition: 3–7 June 2026, at Liberty Cinema and partner venues), is one of Asia's largest LGBTQ film festivals and a major cultural fixture.

Neighborhoods

NEIGHBORHOODS

Bandra West is the center of Mumbai's creative, café, and nightlife culture, and the most queer-comfortable everyday neighborhood. South Mumbai (Colaba, Fort, Marine Drive) is the historic, cosmopolitan tourist core. Andheri East is where Kitty Su and much of the airport-hotel cluster sit. BKC and Lower Parel host upscale bars that frequently hold queer party nights.

Where to Stay

WHERE TO STAY

For most visitors, an international or upscale business hotel is the easy choice. The Taj Mahal Palace in Colaba and the airport-cluster properties in Andheri are reliable and couple-friendly. Bandra suits those who want to be near the café-and-nightlife scene; South Mumbai suits sightseeing.

MAINSTREAM HIGHLIGHTS

The Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace waterfront, Marine Drive at dusk, the Kala Ghoda galleries and Prince of Wales Museum, Bollywood studio tours, the Elephanta Caves, and Mumbai's legendary street food (vada pav, pav bhaji, seafood) all round out a great trip alongside the queer scene.

WHO SHOULD VISIT

Mumbai rewards LGBTQ+ travelers who want a huge, high-energy world city with a genuine—if pop-up-driven—queer nightlife, landmark Pride and film-festival events, and a warm community, combined with culture and food. Same-sex couples can travel comfortably here with everyday big-city awareness; those expecting a Western-style gayborhood should know the scene runs on party brands and community events rather than a strip of permanent gay bars.
