The honest summary: Bochum has no classic gay bar any more and no gay sauna. What it does have is a busy, mostly non-commercial queer scene: a queer basement bar under the Schauspielhaus, a queer culture centre run by the Aidshilfe, a monthly queer party, one of the oldest queer counselling centres in the Ruhr, and a volunteer-run CSD in June. Essen and Dortmund, each 10 to 15 minutes away by train, fill in the rest (saunas and traditional gay bars). Come for the theatre, the mining museum and the Bermuda3eck, and plan your nights around dates rather than addresses.
Legal in one line
Germany has had same-sex marriage, with joint adoption, since 1 October 2017. The old § 175 was repealed in 1994. Since 1 November 2024 the Selbstbestimmungsgesetz lets adults change their legal gender and first name by declaration at the registry office. Conversion therapy on minors has been banned since 2020.
The city in brief
Bochum is a city of about 359,000 people (end of 2025) in the middle of the Ruhr, between Essen and Dortmund. It grew on coal and steel; the last pit closed in 1973 and the Opel plant in 2014. Today the Ruhr-Universität, the Schauspielhaus and the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum shape the city more than industry does. The centre is compact. The Hauptbahnhof, the Bermuda3eck bar quarter, the Rotunde and the Schauspielhaus are all within a 15-minute walk of each other.
Where queer Bochum actually happens
There's no gay district. The Bermuda3eck (around Kortumstraße, Brüderstraße and Viktoriastraße) is the city's general nightlife quarter, and most queer addresses are in or near the centre anyway.
- Oval Office Bar, in the basement of the Schauspielhaus (entrance Saladin-Schmitt-Straße 2). The association KosmoPolis e.V. runs it collectively and calls it a queer bar. The crowd is mixed queer and FLINTA*-friendly, many drinks are pay-what-you-can, and Google lists it as open Thursday to Saturday from 19:00. Right now it's the nearest thing Bochum has to a regular gay bar.
- Fluid – Zentrum für queere Kultur, Große Beckstraße 12. Fluid is a community centre run by Aidshilfe Bochum, not a commercial bar. The Aidshilfe lists the café as open Tuesday and Friday 15:00–18:00. Evening events, announced on Instagram (fluid_bo), include a monthly Queer Poetry Gala, a quiz, workshops and DJ nights.
- Queerbeatzz at Gleis 9, Am Kulturgleis 9, next to the Rotunde. It bills itself as the biggest party for queers and friends in the Ruhr and usually runs on the fourth Saturday of the month. Gleis 9 is a mainstream club on other nights.
- Kino-Center El Brasi, Hattinger Straße 746 in Linden. This long-running adult cinema with a bar and cabins is the venue gay guides list for cruising in Bochum. The crowd is mixed, and it's over-18s only.
Community, health and students
- Rosa Strippe e.V., Kortumstraße 143: queer counselling since 1980, with groups for young people, trans people, lesbians and older queer people, plus the Freiraum youth café. The WAZ marked its 45th anniversary in December 2025.
- Aidshilfe Bochum, Große Beckstraße 12: HIV and STI testing, PrEP advice and Herzenslust for gay and bisexual men. The WIR – Walk In Ruhr sexual-health centre is in the same building.
- SC AufRuhr e.V.: the Ruhr's queer sports club since 1991, with more than 230 members. Badminton, volleyball, swimming, football and more are spread across several cities.
- Autonomes Schwulenreferat at the Ruhr-Universität: the student union's gay/queer office, known for the Pink Pride Party.
CSD Bochum
CSD Bochum is organised by volunteers (Instagram @csdbochum). In 2026 it ran on Saturday 20 June under the motto "Feuer und Flamme", marching from the Schauspielhaus to the Bergbau-Museum, with the party at the Rotunde. In 2025 it took place on 30 August, paid for by more than €5,000 in donations. In 2024 the march was cancelled at short notice, and people joined the protest against the AfD party conference in Essen instead. No reliable attendance figure has been published. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- COXX (Ehrenfeldstraße), once called the living room of Bochum's gay scene, is listed as permanently closed.
- Freibad (Clemensstraße), Orlando and Stargate are listed as closed by German gay directories.
- enJoy, the old Aidshilfe café on Harmoniestraße, has in effect been replaced by Fluid.
- "Freude 39" and "Salome" turn up in searches for "gay sauna Bochum". They are FKK sauna clubs (Salome is in Herne), not gay saunas.
- Medi Therme is an ordinary thermal spa.
Saunas and cruising
Bochum has no gay sauna. The nearest are in Essen (PLUTO and Metropol), about 15 minutes away by regional train, and Dortmund. We couldn't confirm any outdoor cruising area with two independent current sources, so we don't list one.
Practical tips
- Getting there: Dortmund Airport (DTM) is about 30 km away; Düsseldorf (DUS), about 60 km, has far more flights and a direct train in about 45 minutes. Bochum Hbf is on the main ICE line, so Cologne is about an hour away.
- Getting around: the U35 runs from the Hbf to the Ruhr-Universität. Trams and S-Bahn are covered by the VRR ticket, and the Deutschlandticket is valid on all of them.
- Nights out: check Instagram for Oval Office, Fluid and Queerbeatzz before you go; the dates matter more than the addresses. For a traditional gay bar or a sauna, take the train to Essen or Dortmund and check the last connection back.
- Safety: Bochum is relaxed. We found no reports of anti-queer attacks in the city in 2024–2026, though Germany-wide figures for anti-queer crime keep rising, so use normal big-city care at night.
A few words
Schwul (gay), lesbisch (lesbian), queer (queer), Kneipe (pub), Szene (scene), Beratung (counselling), "Wo ist die Party heute?" (Where's the party tonight?).

Yes. Germany has marriage equality and strong anti-discrimination law, and Bochum's centre is relaxed about same-sex couples. We found no reports of anti-queer attacks in the city in 2024–2026. Germany-wide, police recorded rising anti-queer crime in 2025, so use the usual big-city care late at night.
There isn't one. The Bermuda3eck around Kortumstraße and Viktoriastraße is the general nightlife quarter, and most queer addresses are close by: Fluid and the Aidshilfe on Große Beckstraße, Rosa Strippe on Kortumstraße, Gleis 9 by the Rotunde and the Oval Office Bar under the Schauspielhaus.
CSD Bochum is run by volunteers (@csdbochum). In 2026 it took place on Saturday 20 June, marching from the Schauspielhaus to the Bergbau-Museum with a party at the Rotunde; in 2025 it was on 30 August. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
There's no classic gay bar left; COXX and Freibad have closed. The Oval Office Bar under the Schauspielhaus is a collective-run queer bar (Thu–Sat from 19:00). Queerbeatzz, usually on the fourth Saturday at Gleis 9, is the big monthly queer party. For traditional gay bars and saunas, go to Essen or Dortmund.
Easy. The centre is walkable from the Hauptbahnhof, the U35 runs to the Ruhr-Universität, and trams and S-Bahn are covered by VRR tickets and the Deutschlandticket. Essen and Dortmund are 10 to 15 minutes away by regional train. Check the last train back if you go out there.
Not for commercial gay nightlife. Bochum's queer scene is community-run: a queer bar, the Fluid culture centre (poetry gala, quiz, DJ nights), Queerbeatzz parties and student events from the Ruhr-Uni's Schwulenreferat. It's good for a weekend if you plan around dates, and Essen, Dortmund and Cologne are close for more.
