Gay Bars and Clubs in Rio de Janeiro: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Sources: venue Instagram and Sympla listings, Time Out Rio, Diário do Rio, Riotur, the Anda Pride map and VamosGay (Dec 2025) · Report a change

The honest summary: forget the old picture of Ipanema as Rio's gay bar district. Galeria Café closed in February 2026, and the action is now in Lapa and Centro, with Copacabana second and the port district's party halls third. Nights start late (doors at 23:00, full by 1 am) and run Thursday to Sunday.

Lapa and Centro

    • Mara Club, Rua do Lavradio 190. A four-floor mansion club that calls itself a safe space for LGBTQIAPN+ people; Wednesday to Sunday, 23:00 to 06:00.
    • Portal Rio, Rua do Lavradio 163. Pop, funk and drag for a young local crowd, Friday and Saturday from 23:00.
    • Agyto, Av. Mem de Sá 66. Big themed funk and pop nights, tickets on Sympla.
    • Mansão L&D, Rua André Cavalcanti 58, in the old Buraco da Lacraia. Saturdays are Retrô 1140, a revival of the 1990s club; it also has a darkroom and drag, and hosts the Growl bear party.
    • The Pride of Lapa, Rua do Rezende 82A. Drag and karaoke bar, Wednesday to Sunday, 18:00 to 03:00.
    • Retrô Lapa, Rua do Rezende 82. Small dance bar, home of Bailão Carioca for bears and mature men on Saturdays.
    • Turma OK, Rua dos Inválidos 39. Founded in 1961 and the oldest LGBTQ+ association in Brazil: a members' club with drag shows and bingo on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors are welcome.
    • Queerioca, Rua da Quitanda 81. Cultural centre with a bar, a basement dance floor and a weekly Mini Ball, reopened September 2026.

    Copacabana

    • La Cueva, Rua Miguel Lemos 51. Brazil's oldest LGBTQ+ club, open since 1964. A basement with a bear and mature crowd, Thursday to Saturday from 22:00.
    • Pink Flamingo, Rua Raul Pompéia 102. Drag and pop in the former Le Boy building; Treta party on Wednesdays, Drag Race guests regularly.
    • Tau Bar Club, Av. N. Sra. de Copacabana 1417. The former TV Bar, with rotating party nights including Latin ones.
    • Black Cat, Av. Princesa Isabel 21. Men's club with a big darkroom upstairs; we list it with the cruising clubs.

    Ipanema

Silêncio Ipanema, Rua Teixeira de Melo 47, is a cocktail bar with drag pop-ups, open daily into the early hours. It is the only dedicated gay bar left on the block since Galeria Café closed. On Farme de Amoedo itself, the pavement bars fill with the beach crowd at sunset, but they are mixed rather than gay venues.

    Port district

    • The Home, Rua Sacadura Cabral 135, in the old The Week building. A big room for party brands: V de Viadão, ZIG and others.
    • Up Turn, Rua Sacadura Cabral 147. A club since 2003, moved here from Barra in 2026; home of the Hole party.

    Queer women's bars

Novooeste (Santa Teresa) is a lesbian-run cocktail bar, and Brejo Bar (Flamengo) is a small neighbourhood sapatão bar. Most sapphic nightlife happens at roving parties: Bailão das Sapatão, Femme Club Rio and Rebu.

    Zona Norte and Oeste

Sunset Night, a beach kiosk on Ilha do Governador with Drag Sunset nights; Seven Bar Show at the Cascadura bus terminal, with drag from Friday to Sunday; and Boate Casa Grande in Bangu, a trans-focused club on Saturdays. These are local venues with little online coverage, so check their Instagram first.

    Closed or changed

Galeria Café (closed 9 February 2026), The Week (2013, now The Home), Le Boy (2016, now Pink Flamingo), Buraco da Lacraia (now Mansão L&D), Street Lapa (2024), Fosfobox (2020) and Dama de Ferro are all gone. TV Bar is now Tau Bar Club. Up Turn and Silêncio have both left Barra.

    Tips

    • Most clubs sell tickets on Sympla, Tá Sendo or Shotgun; early lists are cheaper.
    • Take Uber or 99 to and from Lapa, Centro and the port at night.
    • Watch your drink: drink-spiking ("boa noite Cinderela") is the scene's best-known risk.
