The honest summary: Viña del Mar is Chile's big beach resort, a garden city of about 335,000 people that runs straight into Valparaíso on the same bay. Its gay life is thin and spread out. There is one gay club, Club Divino, about 10 km out of the centre on the Camino Internacional, and one men's sauna, Templo Spa, on Calle La Marina. There's no gay bar in the centre, no gay district and no gay beach in the strict sense. Most visitors pair Viña's beaches and hotels with Valparaíso's bars, about 15 minutes away by train. The big local date is the Viña del Mar Pride march, which in 2026 was on Saturday 27 June.
Legal in one line: Chile decriminalised sex between men in 1999, introduced civil unions in 2015, and has had full marriage equality, including adoption, since 10 March 2022 (Law 21.400). The 2012 Zamudio law bans discrimination by sexual orientation and gender identity, and trans adults can change their legal name and sex under the Gender Identity Law, in force since December 2019.
About the city
Viña del Mar calls itself the Ciudad Jardín, the garden city, and it earns it: palm-lined avenues, the flower clock (Reloj de Flores) below Cerro Castillo, Quinta Vergara park and a long seafront of apartment towers along Avenida Perú and Avenida San Martín. The 2024 census counted 334,871 people in the comuna, the sixth largest in Chile, and Greater Valparaíso, which includes Viña, Valparaíso, Concón, Quilpué and Villa Alemana, has about 950,000.
The centre is around Plaza Vergara and Avenida Valparaíso, the main shopping street. North of the Marga Marga estuary is a grid of numbered streets (1 Norte, 2 Norte and so on, crossed by Poniente and Oriente streets) with most of the hotels, bars and restaurants, and the casino at the start of Avenida San Martín. Reñaca, about 8 km north along the coast road, is the summer beach and nightlife suburb, and Concón beyond it has the protected dune field. In February the Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar fills the Quinta Vergara amphitheatre and the city's hotels.
Where the scene actually is
There's no gay neighbourhood in Viña, and misterb&b says the same. The two venues we can vouch for are about 9 km apart, so you'll take a taxi or a ride-hailing car between them. What gay nightlife the area has is mostly in Valparaíso: Pagano on Avenida Errázuriz, a gay dance club for more than 20 years, and Máscara on Plaza Aníbal Pinto. Both are a short Merval train or taxi ride from central Viña.
Club Divino
Club Divino, often signed as Club D, is at Camino Internacional 537, on the inland edge of Viña about 10 km from the centre. Spartacus and Lonely Planet have long described it as Chile's largest gay club, with room for about 2,000 people, drag and transformista shows and go-go dancers, and Nomadic Boys still listed it in its gay guide updated in July 2025. Its usual nights are Friday and Saturday from about 23:45 to 05:00.
Google reviews up to October 2026 describe big themed parties, concerts and university nights, two large bars, a cloakroom and parking inside, which suggests the club also rents itself out for mixed events. One July 2026 reviewer complained that the music had moved away from pop. Google currently marks the club as temporarily closed even though reviews keep coming, so check @clubdivino on Instagram or message +56 9 5708 4660 on WhatsApp before you make the trip. It's out of town with no late public transport, so book a taxi or app ride home.
Templo Spa, the sauna
Templo Spa at Calle La Marina 822, a few blocks east of Plaza Vergara, is a men-only gay sauna; its website says "solo para hombres". According to the site it has a steam room, a dry sauna, a maze, a cinema area and private cabins, and entry includes a towel, a sheet, sandals and a locker. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 16:00 and closes early, around 21:30 according to its own homepage, and it's closed on Mondays except public holidays. Alcohol and drugs aren't allowed.
Templo Spa doesn't publish prices, so ask on WhatsApp (+56 9 3331 3123) or Instagram (@templospachile) before you go. Google reviews average 4.0 from about 100. Recent ones range from "excellent, I'll be back" in June 2026 to a November 2025 complaint about no hot water, worn furniture and torn towels, so expect a basic, local place rather than a big European sauna.
Beaches
Viña has no beach with a gay section you can count on. Playa Los Marineros, on Avenida Jorge Montt between the centre and Reñaca, was named by Chilean press and gay blogs in the 2000s and early 2010s as the beach gay men favoured, and a 2023 comment on a beach list still repeats it. We couldn't find anything newer, so take it as a reputation, not a promise. Reñaca's main beach is busy, young and mainstream; we found no independent source calling it a gay beach and no longer list it as one. The Pacific here is cold with strong currents, so swim only where lifeguards are posted, normally from December to March. Chile's only official nudist beach, Playa Luna at Horcón, is about 30 km north and open to everyone.
Cruising
Cruising
We don't list any outdoor cruising area in Viña del Mar or Concón. Old blog posts mention the rocks at Las Salinas and a few parks, but we found nothing recent and reliable, and we couldn't find any gay or cruising source for the Concón dunes, which are a protected nature sanctuary. Sex in public places can be prosecuted in Chile, and lonely spots at night carry a real robbery risk. Templo Spa and dating apps are the realistic options; meet app dates somewhere public first.
Closed or changed, gone but still Googled
Zeus, a gay club remembered from the 2000s, closed after the 2010 earthquake, and Club Caribe moved to Valparaíso. La Soviet on Calle Arlegui has left no trace in recent years. "Gay bars in Viña" lists on Yelp mix in venues from Santiago (Ambar, Illuminati) and Valparaíso (Foxy, X Limón). Divine, the Valparaíso gay club where a fire killed 16 people on 4 September 1993, is remembered every year but has not existed since. DIVAS FOREVER on Calle Arlegui is a strip club for men, not a gay venue, and OVO, the club at the casino, has no LGBTQ+ connection; in 2016 its security staff were sued over a homophobic assault on a man who showed affection to his partner.
Pride & Events
Pride and events
Viña del Mar Pride, the Marcha del Orgullo Viña del Mar, is organised by the Mesa de Diversidades y Disidencias Sexuales de Viña del Mar with the city council as a partner. In 2025 it was on Saturday 5 July, and in 2026 on Saturday 27 June under the slogan "Con Orgullo y Resistencia, Nuestros Derechos no se Negocian". Both years it gathered at 14:00 at the Reloj de Flores and marched to Plaza Sucre. In 2026 the municipal diversity office and Agrupación Kultura Disidente ran a queer artists' market, the Mercadito Disidente, in Plaza Sucre the same day. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing.
Valparaíso has its own march in early September, in memory of the Divine fire; in 2026 it was on 5 September. Santiago's Marcha del Orgullo, the country's biggest, is in late June.
The Festival de Viña has had its own moments. In February 2026 the drag artist Asskha Sumathra became the first transformista to perform on the Quinta Vergara stage and won both of the festival's Gaviota awards, though the hosts cut her set short amid boos, which the Chilean press called censorship. A free LGBTour walking tour of Viña is listed on GuruWalk; check recent reviews before booking.
Community and health
The Oficina de Diversidades y Disidencias Sexuales of the Municipalidad de Viña del Mar was active in 2026 and co-ran the Pride market; contact it through the city council. Groups that marched in 2025 included Power Trans, Fuerza Positiva and the Fundación Red Latinoamericana de VIH. In Valparaíso, ACCIONGAY offers HIV testing and support. Rapid HIV tests are free in Chile's public primary health centres (CESFAM). If you might have been exposed to HIV, go straight to a hospital emergency department; the big public hospital is Hospital Dr. Gustavo Fricke at Álvarez 1532. Post-exposure prophylaxis has to start within 72 hours. Emergency numbers: Carabineros (police) 133, ambulance 131.
Safety
Safety and the national picture
Chile's laws are among the strongest in Latin America, and Viña is a relaxed, middle-class resort where same-sex couples on the seafront rarely draw a second look. Still, the mood has hardened. The movement group MOVILH reported a record number of discrimination complaints nationally in 2025 and an 81% rise in cases in the Valparaíso region in 2024, and in November 2024 a 22-year-old trans woman, Ivanna Viveros Torres, was killed in Viña in what local organisations called a hate crime. President José Antonio Kast took office in March 2026, and LGBTQ+ groups have criticised his government for withdrawing the national human rights plan and cutting funding for a national diversity survey; the marriage, civil union, gender identity and anti-discrimination laws remain in force. Day to day, the usual city advice applies: watch your phone on buses and at the beach, avoid empty parks after dark, and use taxis or apps at night.
Getting there and around
The nearest international airport is Santiago's (SCL). Viña is about 115 to 120 km from Santiago by road, and buses from Terminal Pajaritos or Universidad de Santiago take about an hour and a half to the Viña del Mar bus terminal, three blocks east of the centre. Metro Valparaíso (Merval), the coastal train, has five stations in Viña and runs to Valparaíso every few minutes on weekdays. Local buses run along the coast to Reñaca and Concón. For Club Divino you'll need a taxi or app.
Where to Stay
Where to stay
For the beach and the centre, look along Avenida San Martín and the Norte streets: the Pullman faces the main beach, Enjoy del Mar is the casino hotel, and Esencia and Trinidad are smaller boutique options a few blocks back. On the seafront, the Sheraton Miramar and the ship-shaped Cap Ducal sit on the rocks of Avenida La Marina. The Best Western Marina del Rey and Columba Hostel are close to Plaza Vergara and the train, and Offenbacher-Hof is a B&B on Cerro Castillo. For a quieter beach stay, Hotel Bosque de Reñaca and Dei Templi are up the hill in Reñaca. None of these are gay hotels, but same-sex couples book double rooms in Chile without fuss.
