Denied Check-In For Questioning A 2% Charge – Our Experience At Flock Hostel We don't usually leave negative reviews, but this experience deserves to be shared because it wasn't about money, it was about transparency and how a customer is treated for asking a reasonable question. When we arrived at Flock Hostel, everything was fine until it was time to pay. We chose to pay using Fonepay, which is commonly used by travelers and locals throughout Nepal. At that point, we were informed that an additional 2% charge would be added to our bill. Since we had already spent months traveling around Nepal, we knew this was not right. The 2% charge is the transaction fee on the businesses/merchants end and not the customer/consumer end. So we asked a simple question: "Could you please show us the 2% charge on the official bill?" The answer was no. The charge could not be reflected on the bill, and no official invoice showing the breakdown was provided. At that point, we explained that if an additional fee is being collected from customers, it should be clearly documented and visible on the final bill. Rather than addressing the concern, the front desk staff repeatedly stated that it was "hostel policy." We then requested to speak with a manager. That request was refused. Instead of trying to resolve the issue, discuss the concern, or provide clarification, we were effectively denied check-in for questioning the additional charge. What made the experience disappointing wasn't the amount itself. On a single transaction, 2% is not a large sum. The issue was the principle behind it. If a business wants to charge an additional fee, it should be transparent about it, explain it clearly, and show it on the final bill. Customers should not be made to feel difficult for asking where an extra charge comes from. Throughout our travels in Nepal, we've stayed at numerous hostels, guesthouses, and hotels. Most have been welcoming, honest, and professional. Many accepted digital payments without any additional charge whatsoever. That's why this experience stood out. Good hospitality isn't tested when everything goes smoothly. It's tested when a guest asks a question. Unfortunately, this was one of the few occasions where asking a reasonable question resulted in confrontation instead of clarification. We hope this feedback encourages better transparency around payment charges and better communication with guests in the future.
