Frankfurter Engel

On a small square named for the gay writer Klaus Mann, at the edge of Frankfurt's Bermuda Triangle gay quarter, stands a bronze angel with a visible scar around its neck. This is the Frankfurter Engel, unveiled in December 1994 — the first memorial in Germany dedicated to homosexuals persecuted under National Socialism. Artist Rosemarie Trockel cast the figure from a damaged nineteenth-century plaster angel originally made for Cologne Cathedral; where the broken head was reattached, she left the seam visible. The wound that remains is the point. The inscription commemorates the homosexual men and women murdered under Nazism — and states plainly that the persecution did not end in 1945: Paragraph 175 convictions continued in the Federal Republic for decades. The memorial emerged from a citizens' initiative founded in 1990, and its placement beside the city's living gay quarter ties memory to present-day life: the bars of the Bermudadreieck are around the corner. What you see today: a quiet, dignified sculpture on a small paved square, free and always accessible, three minutes from Konstablerwache station.
